Hmmm.........

I was just sitting here working on lyrics while waiting for my electric hours... And I allowed the player to continue to the next song where I was critiquing the bass part and thinking...

Is there a way I could use two different bass sample sets and select between them without sacrificing full dynamic range or pitch range?

I'm thinking a tedious method would be to use a multipart sampler and then edit notes manually in the midi event list... <phew>!

I can't think of any way to do this on a keyboard... On my midi guitar I coukd assign different patches to different picking locations, but on my old Axon, I think doing this may be limited to the internal synth which I've always had issues with...

Any thoughts?

For some parts it feels so "wrong" to use all slap or all pluck and simply mapping ranges or velocity just somehow doesn't always nail it....

Is a second VSTi instance too simple? I cringe to put multiple MIDI channels in a single track because I can never find things, but that method is also to fire a second VSTi.

I am too lazy to edit an sfz file...

I know what you mean...

I have done that before... First performing all with one sound, then cut/paste individual notes to a second instrument... Not to bad if ther are only a few select notes, but very tedious in more heavily integrated parts...

Not that I'm capable of playing such, but think of Victor Wooten and his amazing techniques of slap/4-finger plucking...

I was just thinking (again) how this bass part in one song I'm working on might really benefit from such an integrated technique where it is currently assigned 100% slap...

I've done this in the past through a few of these methods, but was really hoping someone has some newer, more human method of dealing with this...

I seem to remember some synth patches that use a midi controller to move back/forth between between two basses in this manner, but I don't recall which... And I'd really like to be able to use my own select synth/patches to do it of course!

Probably not what you are trying to do, but....I had a base line that in one part of the song,
I wanted a more slap bass sound. Copied the bass midi track and used a different vst bass sound. One the normal bass, second the slap bass. I then automated the faders so when I wanted to hear more of the slap I cranked it up a little, the other track down. This worked for me.

But you're right... Not quite what I'm looking for... I need to have one specific at a time, not a blend of sounds...

It's amazing how much easier this is for a real bass player than for virtuals...

How about copy the entire midi track to another VST, adjust anything that doesn't play correctly in the new track, bounce both to audio and record automation crossfades between them?

How about.........setting up a drum map and map all the notes accordingly, but for 2 different vsti's.
 
Set one set of output ports to the first vsti and the other set to the second.

I could do that, but it seems more work than copying the midi part and editing notes from each. I could accomplish that with a multipart synth using two midi channels...

That is my first attempt at working on this...

But I'd like to find a way to get this from performance instead of editing... For the future...

The closest to a performance method seems to be the picking range option of my Axon guitar controller.
Here I can play any note and live switch which sample set is being used by adjusting where I pick the string... Near the neck or the bridge... It allows for three zones as if it was three pickups...

Too bad the guitar controller is so sluggish or I'd be doing things like this more often...

a drum map can do that if you are OK with transposing notes in the drum map.
