I'm new to X3 but a long time 8.5 user, trying to make the move to X3.
I can setup pan in the track and it would follow the pan's law, as it should, but in the "Take Lanes' of the track, I try to set the pan just for a certain clip and it doesn't pan.  The level drops if you go hard L or R but it remains mono and doesn't follow the pan's law.
The "Take Lanes" clip gain envelope does work however.  thx
 

I was just using clip pan in take lanes last night, so I know it works. Any chance the channel mono/stereo interleave is set to mono at the console?

By interleave you mean the button to set a track mono/stereo? I'm not in front of Sonar so I can't be certain but when I use the pan in the track itself, it would pan and the behavior of the Take Lanes is difference, should it?

It depends on how each lane was recorded and if the interleave is set up correctly. If everything was recorded the same (stereo or mono, the track lanes will follow the pan of the track as long as the track interleave is set correctly. The track controls the lanes

If the tracks are stereo and the interleave is set to mono, the channel strip panpot will work as expected, but the Take Lane pan automation will not have any effect - the track will stay centered. Setting interleave to stereo allows the Take Lane clip pan automation to work properly.

I will play with the interleave later when I have X3 up.  Track input/source is mono (single mic going to L interface input).

Correct. Take Lanes are a subset of the Track and are overruled by it. If the track is set to Mono, then as far as the Take Lanes are concerned, the world is mono. However, the Track pan will still work because it's affecting the track itself. Similarly, if the track pan is set full left with the interleave set to mono, then the Take Lanes will feed full left regardless of a Take Lane clip's pan setting. 

Craig, your explanation makes perfect sense and that's exactly what the problem was.  In my case, what tripped me was X3 automatically set the interleave to mono based on the interface input (L, R, Stereo). Also I had a mono plug-in in the FX bin, that was the aha moment when I notice the mono plug-in, remove the plug-in and now it works.
Thanks for all the helps, I'm sure will have more question as I dig into X3.  So far liking it, it's full of hidden gems at the same time roadblocks (if you used to 8.5).

I had everything set just the way you said it needed to be. Still no automation on the pan. Then I found a mono eq was on the master bus. Once removed, the panning automation worked fine.
