I'm a video game music composer, but I also have a full-time job to support my family. For the past couple of years I've been steadily getting more and more gigs writing the soundtracks to indie games. I'm not making a lot of money from it yet, but I'm hoping that will change. For now, I'm just enjoying doing what I love in my free time, and building my portfolio with great game projects. By the way, I just landed my dream gig last week: I've started working on the soundtrack to an RPG! Looking forward to sharing something from it when the time is right :)

I'm full-time here... Retirement? I don't know what that is...
I've worked with names such as Arif Mardin, Phil Ramone, Michael Bolton, James Ingram, Ebn-Ozn, VKTMS, Scritti Polliti and more...
<whew>! That turned into a bio! ;-)

Keni - kudos to you and your path pursued.  I'm responding because I have Scritti Polliti on some of my iTunes playlists that I listen to when I get some exercise.  I don't know if you were involved with them in their early days, but they were pretty energetic.  They make me feel like losing calories when I listen to them, so I get energized.

Thanks lawajawa...

Back then I was specializing in synth work before the onset of midi... So I did synth tracks for many acts...

I'm glad it brought up good memories for you...

0) It's a toy I like to play with. :) Seriously, all I do is toy with my audio stuff. I wouldn't even call it serious enough to be a hobby.

In the work world I'm a senior systems administrator. Basically means I run servers, VM, storage arrays, that sort of thing.

I've effectively had 2 parallel professions for 30 years.

I realised very early on that I was better behind a mixing desk than in front of it. Despite 2 years fronting a "successful" local band, my playing and singing suck so I concentrated on engineering, both live and studio.
As a FOH eng I've worked with many has-beens, from The Selecter and Bad Manners thru UK Subs to Farrell & Black. As a stage tech I've encountered all sorts from Girl School to The Stranglers, Motorhead to The Levelers.
I've also been house engineer at the local theatre where I worked with "stars".  Paul Daniels broke one of my radio mics..
As I get older I'm slowing down on the amount of gigs I do, but I still do quite a lot locally for smaller events, including live recording.

All the sound stuff pays for itself, but I earn a living as a director of an engineering company making products for the oil industry...

Hobbyist?
Definitely yes. I spend most of my spare time with my DAW computer on and Sonar running.

Pro?
Maybe a bit, since I am currently using Sonar at work. In my job, my role is somewhere between a teacher and a carer and music is one of the activities that I am involved in. I spend one day per week running a music day program, which is mainly about recording and involves coaxing vocal and instrumental performances from people who require physical or emotional support. I don't earn any extra money from music-related activities, aside from what I otherwise get paid anyway. But the software and some of the equipment that we use belongs to me, not my employer. So I will certainly be claiming for music-related expenses in my next tax return. Does that make me a pro muso? I'm not sure.

2) Part-Time Pro - I guess, though I don't currently earn income from music. My income comes from my career as a software architect, primarily designing large eCommerce applications.

I've always been a part-timer playing in various bands, brass choirs.etc. I've taught music at a small private school and started their band and orchestra program. I scored a couple of plays for a large church several years ago. I used Cakewalk to drive a midi orchestra coupled with live musicians for the plays. Currently I'm concentrating on writing orchestral music.

It's cool to read everyone's story and see how varied a community this is.

Most of my life I've been a full time guitar player, had a 3 year stint with David Allan Coe... oh the stories lol.

Recording is a natural extension for a player, and it becomes just as interesting and addicting as playing. So I still live like I'm a full time musician, truth be told if I didn't generate some income from recording, well I'd have to get a real job. Yes it's a struggle, but ever so fun. :)
