I would not go the Zoom R16 route ... a drummer friend used to have one but I didn't like the sound quality he got out of it (seemed very demo-ish which is not surprising considering the large amount of features vs. its retail price) ... I also remember problems with phantom power and noise ...

Any semi pro to pro sound card can achieve great drum recording. Its not the sound card, but your mic choice, the room you are in, and the placement of the microphones that will be your greatest obstacle.
That said, Stay away from sound cards that need a Dice II Firewire Chipset.

Totally agree with CJ ... so try to borrow / rent high quality microphones ... and see what you can get out of your room ... at the end of the day there is now the drum replacer and the ARA route to MIDI which may be the easier way to achieve the sound you are looking for ...
