When I use kontakt player together with action strings it works as it should be
until I turn the gain knob in sonar above 80% then it just played the note's instead of a pattern.
 
Can someone verify this of this is a bug or problem with my configuration?

I'm on cellphone so can't see your signature if you list your specs . If you are on Platinum please go into CCC and check it is on the latest. Otherwise confirm Sonar version if X3E or something. Also please go into NI control centre and check everything is up to date.

Finally perform a vst reset (not just rescan).

I've just checked everything and I am up to date with both sonar and kontakt player.

Try the VST reset (see link) and let us know.

Are you sure that Action Strings isn't setup so that hi-velocity notes only play notes and not patterns? (I don't know, nor do I have Action Strings, but this sounds plausible to me).
 
On a Midi track, the gain knob is tied to velocity, not volume.
