I see it as an advantage. If I'm eating pizza while mixing at least the grease and crumbs go on a smooth glass surface and not into my pots and faders
To answer your question. I clean my studio once a week including the touch screen and a really don't eat pizza while I'm mixing.

Hey, Scott.  I love the V-Studio and personally am not sure it is the problem, but I am trying to test all theories proposed by the technicians.  The issues may or may not be solved--takes time with intermittent issues.

Some of the issues:
•  Audio disappears after a certain number of soft synths are added.  Example: Everything is fine with 7 synths, but all audio disappears when an 8th is added.  Not a problem in every project.
•  Hollywood Strings performs so badly that I cannot use it even though my system far exceeds the requirements and I limit myself to "lite" patches.  Notes drop like a synth that is running out of polyphony when only 2-3 notes are playing.
•  Cut, copy, and paste suddenly stop working.
•  Sonar crashes when I open Staff view.
•  Sometimes when I open a project, the Ins/Outs for the tracks are messed up: V-Studio 1-2 will be Fantom, 3-4 will be 1-2, MIDI output will be Console instead of MIDI port, etc.
•  No audio if more than one project is open.  Makes it difficult to copy parts/tracks.

Hi konradh

I'm not sure if your problems are so much VS-700 related, there might be some PC issues ...???
•  Audio disappears after a certain number of soft synths are added.  Example: Everything is fine with 7 synths, but all audio disappears when an 8th is added.  Not a problem in every project.

Haven't seen that happening (yet), but I'm not owing / using the same synths as you do

•  Cut, copy, and paste suddenly stop working.

Haven't seen that with sonar yet, but I have that same problem occasionally on an engineering PC where Sonar is not installed ...
•  Sonar crashes when I open Staff view.

Does it also crash when opened via mouse from regular menus? I have the problem that nudging clips with the VS-700 crashes Sonar but just recently dicovered that it also crashes when doing it via the Process menu, so I filed a problem report
•  Sometimes when I open a project, the Ins/Outs for the tracks are messed up: V-Studio 1-2 will be Fantom, 3-4 will be 1-2, MIDI output will be Console instead of MIDI port, etc.

I have that happening when I switch on my interfaces in a different order - ever since I'm following the same power up sequence, this is pretty much gone
•  No audio if more than one project is open.  Makes it difficult to copy parts/tracks.

Need to test this. Haven't noticed it yet, but I usually work with single projects only as the FANTOM is complaining badly if opened in 2 projects ...

Yes I can see that working, with the picture showing your screen set up.
A bit like working with an iPad and Vcontrol. But bigger.
Nice set up.

SSL Nucleus or AVID Artist series.

Go with SSL Nucleus!

SSL Matrix is the same as SSL Nucleus. Its only extra analog amp's and EQ included on same console.
is it worth the extra cash? No.

Next up is Digital Tascam DM4800. Controller and digital console

after that Yamaha 02R V2 Digital console and controller.

After that SSL AWS or System 5 MC or Yamaha NuAGE

Thanks wildman
Another nice thing is that you don't need to set up ACT . You open Sonar and it works. It used to drive me nuts when I used my Axiom 49 as a surface control. If you forgot to turn it on before opening Sonar you'd need to reset the midi in/outs and it would loose the preset sometimes.

Hey Konrad... wow, that's quite a few problems. Have you been in touch with Cakewalk tech support? I don't see how the V-Studio would be the sole cause for all those problems.

As for Hollywood Strings... that definitely requires a lot of resources. Do you have it on a dedicated sample streaming drive? Are you using the ASIO or WDM driver mode?

I really would contact Cakewalk support to see if they can walk you through some things. But yeah, if they're intermittent, it'll definitely be difficult to nail them down.

Here's part of a user's review of the Nucleus posted at Sweetwater - he gives it one star:

"... Nucleus has no surround sound, no talk back, not enough inputs and outputs and not enough preamps. This unit reminds me of a modern version of the Yamaha 01x but its still does not compare to the 01x. To consider this unit as home or pro gear is kinda crazy. SSL fix this unit and give us something that compare to the others. The name SSL will not sell the unit..."

I've seen the review.  The Nucleus is not attempting to be an audio mixer like the Yamaha.  It's apples and oranges, a review that is not useful.  I don't have a Nucleus yet, but I am only interested in how good a controller it is.

I hate to post this after all of the discussion on these high end controllers.....but.... the Korg Nano Kontrollers are really cool. If you happen to be one of us lucky ones that happen to get it configured correctly. I have 3 of the fader banks running for 24 channel mixing/panning/mute/record/solo. all for about $220.00 They are cheap, really fun, and don't take up a ton of desk area. I had to use the generic cakewalk mode to get them to communicate properly with sonar x2, but now that's all setup it works like a dream. (I could never get mackie control protocol to work with them though) They really do get the job done.

Yes +1 for the Korg Nano
I run one at my vocal recording mic position, to control X2 when tracking my vocals, as its too far from my desk.
On my desk I use a Presonus faderport and a Shuttle Pro.  Both Excellent devices.

Would love a big control surface, but way out of my league.
(I used to have a Behringer thing with motorised faders but it died one day and so that was that. Tried ipad with V-control, but it messed up Sonar somehow, so took it off.)
