Hello,
I use more my iPad 2 Air embedded in my studio as a sound generator and as guitar effect (Flux: amazing).
Apple coming to unlock the ability to exchange MIDI and live sounds with a simple USB cable (that comes with the power supply of the iPad) I bought (€ 9.99) the amazing Music IO (http: //musicioapp.com/downloads/windows/)
This is a free plugin for insertion into an audio track and an app (free for MIDI and just for € 9.99 with MIDI and audio).
Windows integration examples are made with Ableton Live ( and the principle seems simple: the audio track containing the plugin is routed to a bus which serves as input to another track that records the signal sent by the plugin.
3 mouse clicks and you're fully integrated with the iPad with its synths, effects etc. Latency is very low and I enjoyed driving two synthesizers (Animoog and iM1) at the same time from a MIDI keyboard connected via USB on my PC routed by Sonar via Loopmidi to the iPad and to play guitar by treating it with Echopad and RSS: on the iPad.
Where I'm down with Sonar X3 producer is that I am unable to understand how to SAVE these beautiful sounds. I have in fact failed to reproduce what seems so simple with Ableton ie select a track as input to another or from a bus as input of a track.
I asked the support Music IO and the developer, very responsive, don't have Sonar for testing and it seems to him that most of DAWs have similar routing functions as Ableton.
So I turn to the Sonar community and I also ask the Sonar support in parallel: what have I missed? Anyone have a clue?

I am downloading and installing the VST now. I have the MusicIO app on my iPad Air, but had no idea there was a VST plugin to which it could talk.
I don't follow your line of questioning, but I'm sure it will make sense once I start to play around a bit.
I'll report back in a few hours.

Cool, thank you. I'm not very easy with English but I'll try my best. I just want to record the sounds coming (synth apps) and coming back (effects apps) from the iPad via the Music IO plugin.

Is the plugin available for the PC or is it Mac (Apple) only.
Just checked and it's in public Beta for the PC now.

Hi Mike, as far as I understand, the plugin is only for PC as Mac has more direct ways to connect.

Yeh it's seems a bit confusing. I just found a reference toyon installing on Mac OS X and on a PC as a plugin but a PC Beta program on another page.

I had some answers in a French Sonar's forum and some said that what I'm looking foris just impossible with Sonar. But: getting out to the soundcard in my case by SPL Crimson 5/6 and getting in another soundtrack still by SPL Crimson 5/6... works! I tried with sounds produced by the iPad (synths) and sounds (guitars and percussions) coming out by Sonar, treated by iPad effects and coming back to Sonar and I recorded pristine sounds without annoying latency especially on real time played instruments.
No solution at the time inside Sonar though.

The plugin requires two audio tracks. The first track physically hosts the plugin in the effects section. Because the audio is entering the signal path at the insert stage, not the track input stage, you can't record directly to the track where the plugin resides, as there is no input to record.
This is where the second track comes in. You need to route the output of the first track to the input of the second track then record on track two.
Sonar can't do this, as it doesn't allow for tracks to output to other tracks, only buses.
The workaround is to use the 'Bounce to Tracks' feature. Solo the track with the plugin instantiated, then bounce with the Main Outputs or Entire Mix set as your source and the second track you created as the destination.

Wow - that would need to be one unique and amazing sound coming out of an ipad to go through that process for! Pretty cool on the novelty scale though:)

reactorstudios: thank you very much for this soluce! I found another one as well: I output the track with the plugin to my soundcard 5/6, come back in another track with 5/6 and record.
tenfoot: result is on my kitusai soundcloud webpage under the music name Bawu.
Many thanks to all of you!
