I signed up for my copy. Plan is to DL to a new SSD and then go dual boot until things settle.

Here's an example of the side effect of these audio improvements, lots of posts like this around the internet...

My advise for anybody upgrading when it comes to the time... is to be cautious! Wait and monitor the internet.... As with any software (just like Platinum) often a lot of pain has to happen in order to get gain. It may end up that some audio drivers will need to be revised (or rewritten) for Windows 10, and Win10 may uncover driver bugs that may not have been apparent in earlier versions of Windows. And of course MS will bake in their own regression bugs to throw into the pot.

"For compatibility info, see the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Centre."

So really this is a giant Windows 8.1 service pack, some UI tweaks and other stuff bolted on. So it looks like business as usual... Regardless I'm going to wait 6 months after the release before it goes anywhere near my DAW.

Being someone who gets along pretty well with 8.1, this is good news for me...

I started with DOS 1.0. Skipped Windows until Win386. Win95 was OK. WinNT was OK. WinXP was OK. Skipped Vista. Win7 has been very good. Skipped Win8. MS skipped Win9 (ha!).

I've read consistently good things about the Win10 betas and plan to upgrade as soon as given the chance. Really looking forward to the new core (pun intended) audio API!

You can run a check from the little tray app that will check you PC for any possible problems, interestingly it found none on my primary DAW even though it is running legacy Firewire.  Does this mean they have reintegrated legacy Firewire for win 10 after dropping and then reinstating for win 8.x?

Check here...

I could be wrong but the test in the applet seemed to do nothing much other than check the Windows version and maybe basic hardware specs. I suspect there will be an upgrade assistant released in due time, however MS seem to be implying that if it works in Win 8.1 it will work in Windows 10....

So if you are running Windows 7 or 8.0 this is probably something to try:

For anyone with hardware synths that have drivers... Install Windows 10 at your peril until you have confirmed that drivers are already available for your key pieces of gear... So Yamaha, Korg, Roland, Access etc. etc..

This seems to be such an obvious thing, but this new "Apple" style model from Microsoft causes a rash of frustrated activity from MAC users on a variety of music forum every year in the fall when they upgrade their mac os and for some reason each and every year they are surprised (again) that their gear no longer connects.

I've been part of the tech preview insiders program for developing apps so I've been running it on a virtual machine for some time. I agree that if you're dependent for your livelihood on a stable DAW/OS combo you should wait until all your vendors are telling you're good to go. That said, MS has made the audio engine and MIDI subsystem a priority (finally!) and there are some great reasons to make the move when the time is right.

For an unvarnished set of opinions, look at this thread on gearslutz:

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/975864-windows-10-thread-post-your-expectations-here.html

There is at least one MS employee posting there (in a personal capacity) and there's good anecdotal stuff, including device compatibility experiences.

As for me, heck yeah, I'm jumping on this horse as soon as I can saddle her up. :)
