Since I curious about certain M-Adio hardware not working I'm going to dual boot the Tech preview on an Intel Q6600 with a FW410, AP192.

Since the beginning of windows updates, I have it disabled on all my computers.

And I set it to "tell me but don't do it" on my client's computers.

I have had way too many calls about machines not starting. Usually because of hardware updates.

I was surprised to learn so many had the w10 icon in the tray this morning.

I had w10 preview installed on a computer here a couple of months ago, and it would correctly update. three times it did its 1+ hour download and attempted install and then another 45 min roll-back.

As mentioned above, auto updates can interfere with lots of important stuff.

What I did to go from 7 to eight:
Created dual boot:
Cloned the C: disk
Installed similar sized disk
Restored to the new disk
Upgraded the new disk to 8

This way all drivers and programs were installed, most maintained registration and activation, all drivers were the same. This allowed me to change stuff as needed without totally reinstalling, or having to roll-back.

I will do the same with 10.

Also, does anyone know for sure what kind of model Windows 10 is going to use? A subscription model, or something like Cakewalk's Membership model, or...?

I think they are using 10 as a transition.
Give 10 for free to get more people to install right away, with less squacking and hold-outs. (How many in this thread would be so excited and ready if it were a paid upgrade .. in any DAW thread? lol)
After a period of time, drop support for anything under 10.
Wait another, shortened, period of time, drop support for 10, and now you have everyone paying a monthly fee to rent it like Adobe, not own it like CWs model. (It is MS afterall! lol)

That's what my psychic future-bone tells me. lol

I think you're right that they're trying to get everyone onto a common platform. I don't think it's likely to be a bait-and-switch, though, and I struggle to imagine them trying a rental model. MS has never made its money from individual home user sales anyway; the Windows money primarily comes from OEMs and enterprise licenses, and that's not changing.

This one MS really wants to control, and almost certainly it will be irreversible, and may kill your activation code for the prior Windows version used to upgrade it. The free version at least requires that you keep Windows automatic updates running, so likely the only choice you will be given is take it or leave it, and you will not be able to decline available updates unless you have a commercial license. This distribution model as described so far makes no provision for a downloadable iso or other method of upgrading except as part of an internet connected automatic update.

My DAW computer is off line so Win 10 looks like a no go for me, at least for now.

My DAW is mostly offline except when I update Sonar or download/update a VST... even if it was online all the time I would not leave automatic updates on. I choose the ones I want and "hide" the ones I don't want. That may be a deal breaker.

You do have a good point there about the home user, even though that is always evolving and more people work remotely, it could never catch up to the main-frame systems and networks.

My issue with the reservation is it says, it will download it and notify you when you can install.
Even with auto update set to notify only, I'm not 100% sure we will be able to move and run it from another disc as far as the reservation system goes.
I'll def let my DAW sit and watch while I try other machines, or get feedback from you guys. lol

Edit: And I wouldn't call it bait and switch either way, just a 3 or 4 year transitional plan .... lol

As far as I can work out from what I've read, free upgraders will get access to a downloadable image from the Windows Store that they can do a clean install with. However, you only get that after you've done the in-place upgrade over your current installation. Which is a bit of a drag.

I think I'll probably be trying YouDon'tHasToCallMeJohnson's method he describes above.
