The 'not compatible with Sonar' bit on the Zoom website probably indicates that there is no dedicated control surface plugin for it. However it is possible to use pretty much anything with the Generic Control surface protocol, as long as the surface is sending MIDI. HOWEVER, you need to 'teach' the GCS (Generic Control Surface) interface using the Midi Learn function. 'Generic' means it can be used with any controller, but it has no way of knowing how to respond to whatever MIDI commands the controller is sending unless you tell it how. This is pretty clearly outlined in the manual.
Depending on what version of Sonar you're using (it was introduced in version 6), you might also have some luck using the ACT MIDI CONTROLLER (ACS) protocol, which will let you control different plugins with the surface and switch between them automatically based on what you're working on at the time. It also takes some setting up, again you'll need to consult the manual to get the most out of it. You'll face a bit of a learning curve but it will be worth it in the end...
Good luck!
