  • Drawing evelopes during playback {SOLVED} operator error ;-(

Seems I am not able to draw automation envelopes during playback.  I know that was possible in earlier versions.  Typically I might like to loop a section and draw the automation, while listening, but I'm now getting the  "zero with the slash" symbol  when I try to do so.  Stop playback,...yeppers, ..draws just fine.
Anyone experience this or....??

BTW, I'm currently up to date with SPlat...

Why not try moving a write enabled fader (or other control) during playback - this will draw the envelope for you

Maybe a new feature? Or perhaps a technical necessity as they pursue the ideal of "gapless audio" that some users have inexplicably demanded?

Or maybe they're still looking for ways to further screw up automation so that I'll never upgrade again.
OK, I'm sure nobody's got a vendetta out for me, but the direction of SONAR's automation development is why I'm still on 8.5. Losing the ability to hand-plant automation nodes during playback would surely be the very last nail.

On the bright side, it may just be a bug!

I just tried drawing freehand with a mouse during playback. Worked for me, nodes appeared. Full disclosure, I used a new automation lane. Also, the new points didn't show up until I stopped dragging (as opposed to when not playing, the points show up as one drags).

Automation seems to be a little hit or miss as far as I can see.  I tried doing it with an EQ setting, using the LP64 EQ plugin, because I only wanted the plugin active during a certain part due to an effect I was trying to create.  It didn't work at all.  Maybe I wasn't getting it quite right, but I would have expected the automation lane to have *some* effect, even if it wasn't the effect I intended.

@czyky, were you looping the section? With the OP, I could see issues with automation during looping, and I honestly have never attempted such while a loop was active.

There is no change here in Platinum that I can see. There is one issue where the *preview* drawing doesn't display while the transport is rolling but that is identical to behavior in X3 and earlier. I just tried it and if you ignore the preview drawing it actually draws automation during playback fine.

BTW please avoid making generalizations like its "hit or miss". Not only is it inaccurate and misleading to other readers, it clouds the issue and makes it harder for us to find real definable problems.

>>the direction of SONAR's automation development is why I'm still on 8.5.
Bit there is no regression in automation from 8.5. We have ton's of automation fixes since 8.5 including more write and read modes. No comparison whatsoever! I wouldn't trust my projects to 8.5 automation editing if I were you knowing the fixes that have been made since :) The whole refusal to move from 8.5 thing is similar to people refusing to upgrade from XP even though newer OS's were light years ahead in all aspects. I understand reluctance to learn new workflows when people are time strapped but there is a point when you have to move on...

Ok...I have to apologize.  This is operator error.   I had the channel in "Write mode" and it wasn't happening.  Took it out of that, and it works just perfect.

This is a feature I use a lot, and it's kinda embarrassing that I overlooked the error I was making.
As mentioned as a suggestion above, I usually start out in "write mode" and use the fader....but then down the line, I'll tweak with the pencil tool.  Basically when I'm done tweaking with the automation, I'm basically done mixing too!  Big difference from the old days of mixing, for sure.

Noel, huge thanks for chiming in and again my apologies for making things appear, as they weren't.

btw, automation has always been 100% for me.  I may not be going into depth as others are, but I sure use envelopes ...both clip and channel to a huge degree.  Fine tuning is the way to go for me, while looping sections.
