Heat (overheating) can cause that.  Common on laptops.  No warning, no BSOD notice (it isn't a BSOD), etc.

You can try cleaning it, as laptops have minimal fan speed/cooling and can collect dust.

Hi Jack,

Yeah, I did think of this.

I keep some thermal paste handy so that I can remove the CPU and graphic card and replace them correctly. Done it a couple of times, in the last 6 months in fact, so I was wondering if it could be something else, OS or software related.

I'll check again, as the heat sinks to get a bit clogged with dust, like you say.

I also sit my laptop on a cooler but I don't think it is a very good one. I have some spare 12cm fans left over from a previous PC build so I am considering building my own cooler base.

cheers

and check event log, there should be something in there

Windows event logs may have the details.

Start... Mmc.. File... Add remove snap in
Event viewer
Windows logs

Thanks Paul and Geoff,

Just looking at some of the event logs now... Lots of stuff I don't understand...

Definitely an "error" in there though:-

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Five hours after the last crash and my laptop hasn't blinked... Been doing CAD stuff all afternoon while streaming music...

Indeed...

Last thing yesterday I played on a MMOFPS shooter called Planetside 2, for a couple of hours... Not a problem...

So, I dunno... I don't really want to get a new laptop yet as this one is meeting most of my needs. And it has cost me getting on for £3000 with the couple of SSD updates I have done.

Check the application logs for the time period preceding the restart.

Thanks, Geoff, I do, but none of it makes sense.

And last night I played that game again... all fans screaming! And not one crash.

This morning, it shut down again.

This time, probably because I stopped the automatic restarts, I got the "Stop Screen" and at the bottom it said, "Stop Code: BUGCODE USB DRIVER"

I'm worried that all this sudden crashing is going to break something else, like one/both of my SSD's

That said, I find it amazing that Windows 10 restarts without any problems reported and SONAR projects do not appear to be getting corrupted. Yes... I did have a project open at the time but is was idle at the time...

I would probably check that all USB device drivers are up to date.  Or alternatively, if you have recently added or updated any device drivers, I would uninstall or roll back to an earlier version.

And maybe check that your USB power management is turned off on all devices.

Thanks for your input John,

I honestly can't recall adding or changing any USB stuff. And won't all the USB drivers be updated with Windows updates?

I've just checked my OCTA-CAPTURE drivers and I have the latest 1.5.2 installed.

My only other USB devices that were hooked up at the time of crash were my keyboard and mouse. Oh, and I use the USB hub which is part of my BENQ monitor... I suppose I should check that, just in case.

cheers

Just checked this and I had to uncheck (turn off) power management for all devices... So we'll see how that goes
