To add to the previous post, bypass all the effects (type E) to see if effects with look-ahead buffers are adding latency. Multiband limiters and compressors are notorious for that. Also try toggling PDC after you do this.

Yea, what Craig sez. It sounds like a look ahead effect, plus other problems. 2 seconds is a lot.
Open a new project if you have to in order to work through the latency.

Hijacking the thread a little here, but how do you know if a plugin has look ahead buffers? Just that this kind of knowledge may come in useful for me, with my computer having a less than stellar CPU.

Two seconds (2000 msec, 88200 samples at 44.1K) is just unbelievable, even with plugins with lookahead buffers. What is it really?
