I know windows see the octa-capture in devices, and it is set as the default device for playback and recording.

Personally I set Windows to use the on-board sound and reserve the audio interface for Sonar only.

Ditto ... then I take the output of both and feed a Samson C-Control for sharing speakers ... or not :)

I just plug a S/Pdif cable from the onboard sound to my interface to give single button source selection and direct digital recording of any audio in Windows (youtube, etc.) for guide tracks.

WARNING - DETOUR
What I like about the C-Control is it's a matrix so I can have multiple sources and multiple destinations to choose between.  I have one of the destinations going to a sub - single button on/off for that, plus a mono button for checking mixes.  Pretty handy little box for a bill.
