I use BFD3 (and BFD2 sometimes) and have never had stability versions with the software.

I'm late to the party, but I'll add my two cents:
I love Battery for this purpose.
I use it extensively for remix work. I cut up the original drums and load each piece of kit into a cell, duplicate cells and edit them using the Battery effects and modulation options to create variations on the original, give each variant a velocity range, then trigger away with my MPD18.
I also quite like sampling the same drum from different points in a track and then triggering the variants using the round-robin function in Battery.
I find i'm using Battery more and more as my go to sampler and completely neglecting Kontakt.
Incidentally, to the OP, if you are a Reason fan, Kong (the built-in drum sampler) is dead simple and can load and manipulate user samples.
 
 

Kontakt would be an easy, if expensive option. You could probably use the free TX16Wx, neither are dedicates drum samplers but I dont see any issues.

Thanks Glyn! I downloaded TX16WX and had the 122 samples loaded and velocity mapped in an hour. A little tweaking of the trigger types and it is working perfectly. My first ever experience with freeware - what an eye opener! Just goes to show that the price tag is not always indicative of quality and usefulness at either end of the cost scale.

For what it "seems" you are trying to do, Session Drummer 3 may be simplest, since you can drag/drop samples onto the kit pieces, and limit the velocities on the MIDI track.

What about the old fxpansion Dr008?

It lets you load your own samples into a very extensive multi-layered drum kit...
