I'm late to the party, but I'll add my two cents:
I love Battery for this purpose.
I use it extensively for remix work. I cut up the original drums and load each piece of kit into a cell, duplicate cells and edit them using the Battery effects and modulation options to create variations on the original, give each variant a velocity range, then trigger away with my MPD18.
I also quite like sampling the same drum from different points in a track and then triggering the variants using the round-robin function in Battery.
I find i'm using Battery more and more as my go to sampler and completely neglecting Kontakt.
Incidentally, to the OP, if you are a Reason fan, Kong (the built-in drum sampler) is dead simple and can load and manipulate user samples.
