It sounds as if the OP has some midi files that crash sonar and some that don't and he would like to determine what is unique about the files that crash as opposed to those that do not.  There might be a better way to go about this.  I have not had this problem but I only import midi files that I have created in a notation application.

I am still confused... If WMP plays the file, then it must be in a MIDI format... Right clicking the file and "Open with..." and choosing SONAR is the simplest method. If NO "MIDI output" is assigned in SONAR X3 and above, SONAR will also insert and route the TTS-1 synth for you.

It might help to post one of the files that crashes SONAR. What SONAR version are you using?

Hello let's see if I can clarify a few things I used the term "open" I was generally speaking, to mean load, open, import, drag and drop, right click and choose, all mean the same thing to me and yes I have tried all these. When I do open the files in question SONAR crash still some I can preview in SONAR others if I preview them that would crash SONAR too.
As to posting into original it's no longer and important how many post I have and this is keep it neat.

When SONAR crashes does it produce an error message or minidump?

Although continually modifying the original post works for you it may discourage others from replying to your threads.

There was many midi converter apps around back in the day, and most of them trashed the data, or added data that caused crashes in players other than the original program.

Just a shot in the dark.

Point taken scook & Doktor Avalanche
scook would copying things back to original and still make separate post make people not want respond to my post?

Adding all your posts to the original is a little confusing. I would recommend not doing it.

What created the misbehaving MIDI files?
Any chance of making available one of the files which crashes SONAR so others could look at it?

Nothing to add to the issue itself, but as to modifying the OP - it's usually best to add "Edit" or similar making it clear what you started with and what's been added/changed.    Or, you could just reply to the thread to do that.

I'm going to guess these midi files have their timecode set to smpte instead of ppq. if you want to send me a file I'll take a look. i haven't found a daw yet that opens midi files with smpte timecodes correctly.

hey red4 here's an old post i helped another user with.  http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2810578
if you're comfortable with a hex editor, give this a shot...  i was a bit loopy and referred to smpte as smtp, but you should get the idea...
