  • I assume I have a Latency problem (p.2)

I deleted the Brickwall, but it still didn't work.  The new test project, I opened is working fine as far as latency goes, but I have been having a problem with the track just stopping.  However, I have been having this problem before and that is why I am getting close to building or purchasing a new machine.

Any thanks for taking the time to help.  It is much appreciated!

Can you insert the Perfomance Module into the Control Bar in Sonar and let us know if anything is maxing out?

To do this right click on the Control Bar > Modules and then select Performance (you may have to select it a couple times before it replaces another module or you could just remove a current module to allow room for it).

Usually when I get audio stops my HDD icon flashes red indicating my Read/Write buffers need to be increased.

But check it out to see what's up first. You CPU ain't the fastest but you should be able to get a reasonable amount of low latency without problems.

Are you using ASIO? I notice you are using a firewire interface (I think). Do you know if you have a Texas Instrument firewire chipset (if you are plugged straight into the motherboard then the chipset would be on the MOBO and many MOBO's don't have the TI set). You can buy firewire cards with the TI chipset for relatively cheap and they can help things.

In the meantime if all else fails you could set up a new project (or use your test project) to have the same settings/tempo/etc as your current project, export a stereo file of the whole mix, import it into the new/clean project and then record your track into that. Then when you are done import the track into the original project and turn your buffer back up.

You may want to look up some performance tweaks for your system as well. Lots of info about that stuff here on the forum if you google around the site.

Cheers.

Thanks again for your input!  The performance is at 26% cpu usage, and I saw no red lights on the hard drive meter come up when it stops.

I moved the Firewire from the motherboard and put it into a firewire card that I also have on the computer.  I got the same results.  I think if I reboot, the stopping problem goes away for a while, but then comes back.

Download and run the free DPC Latency Checker or LatencyMon. Your machine should be able to run a 128-sample buffer with those few plugins without pops, clicks or dropouts. If it can't, some driver (WiFi adapters are notorious) is likely causing spikes in Deferred Procedure Call latency (a measure of how quickly your CPU can respond to requests to service a high-priority driver process like reading and writing audio buffers).

LatencyMon is probably the better tool for actually figuring out which drivers are contributing to increased DPC latency. The most important thing is not that it's super-low, but that it's stable. Anything under about 500us (microseconds) and stable should work pretty well, but most PCs can stay under 300us without extraordinary measures.

As for new PC specs, CPU speed and core count and low DPC latency are more important than RAM when it comes to the ability to provide low latency while running a lot of plugins (though there's no getting around plugins that use lookahead buffers). DPC latency also varies with motherboard hardware and system drivers. In choosing/building a new system, you might want to research which mobos are known to deliver low DPC latency.

Sorry if you already answered this but do you have an antivirus installed? If so can you take the system offline and disable "real time protection/monitoring" to see if that helps? Also the type of AV matters. Microsoft Security Essentials is less intrusive than others like Macaffee/AVG/Norton/etc...

If that does help then you could add all your Cakewalk project folders and associated audio stuff to your AV whitelist or do what I do... just keep the system offline at all times (unless I'm updating) and only enable the AV as needed (you gotta be VERY mindful of this though... remember to turn it on when connecting to the internet!!).

Also if there is a wireless adapter in play that can screw things up and make sure in your system settings you have Windows set to performance mode and all your hardware is set to Always On/Max/whatever the highest performance setting is.

Cheers.

And listen to Brundlfefly. That's a good suggestion from a smart dude. You can call Cake tech support as well. They'll probably recommend Latencymon too.

If you do call tech support I recommend creating an online support request through their tech support email thingie (there is a stickie at the top of this forum "How to Contact Cakewalk" with the info). Describe all your system details, what you have installed, what the problems are, anything you've tried so far and any extra info you can provide. Then write down the support ticket number the support request generates. When you call them reference that number and the dude on the phone can pull up your details onscreen so you don't have to explain it all over the phone. Saves time and you're less likely to forget or miscommunicate something.

Cheers.

Still doing further testing.  I rebooted the computer, but still have the same problem.  Sometimes I get a message, usually the first time I try to play or record in a song that the file is not set to the correct settings to match the card setting, but then as soon as I hit it again it works fine.

The C drive is 68% full, but I am working off of my E drive for the project and saving the audio to the E drive as well.

I tried my test for latency project added two more tracks, recorded in the second track, muted the first, and the audio stopped working again only after a few seconds, hit record at that point again and it recorded for maybe 10 seconds and stopped by it self again, hit record again and it stopped right away.

I disconnected everything from the computer which at this point were just external backup drives and a midi to my keyboard.  Only things connected now are the firewire to the firestudio, and the wireless mouse.  Still same problem.  I already had avast turned off, and everything else off in the tray.

Rebooted again and only opened the test for latency project which now has 6 tracks in it.  It seems to be working.  I will do further testing.

Do your external drives have backup utilities doing stuff in the background? If disconnecting them helped that could very likely be the culprit. I only hook up my external drives when I need to transfer fiels to them and I use them as simple mass storage devices... meaning I don't let those utilities go hog wild on the system (I transfer my backups manually). They'll search for new stuff to back up all the time which can interrupt data streams and generally distract your system. Usually that isn't noticeable but for streaming stuff like audio and video it can cause all sorts of problems.

Cheers.

@Fads...  probably not on topic but, the sizes of your external drives in your signature, you mean tb yes? Otherwise, lack of drive space could be wonking up the works...
