  • Copying Tracks Between Songs

It used to be simple, before the days of plugin (DXI or VST) softsynths. Select a track or tracks in one song, Edit/Copy. Then go to the other song, Edit/Paste, and paste in the track from the other song in the desired track location.

I'm having trouble doing that now though, in a piece using plugin softsynths. In this case I selected (in song 1) both the MIDI track and its synths output audio track, and copied them to the clipboard. I opened Song 2, and pasted the copied tracks there.

On first glance, it appears to work. The pasted tracks appear in song 2. However, all the synth configuration has been lost. The synth output track no longer goes to the same synth it did before, and the MIDI track doesn't route to the synth track anyhow, but to the systemwide (non plug-in) synth.

Therefore, there is then a lot of work involved, reconfiguring the synth output for that track.

In other words, the MIDI notes are copied and pasted from the original track (in Song 1), but that's about all. And the copying and pasting of the synth output track seems to have been a waste, as it doesn't come across the same in the new song, it's lost its synth configuration, and the MIDI track doesn't route to it in any case.

Is there something I missed. In using plugin softsynths, is there a way to copy a track from one song to another, retaining all its synth configuration, without having to reprogram that in the new song?

I hope that this question is clear, and that someone can help me with it. Thank you in advance.

for some reason You cannot do a straight copy between project in any version of Sonar.
You already are doing the 2nd step.
The first step is to save the tracks to a Track Template
Import the template into project 2

Then copy and paste midi (and audio) to the tracks created from the template.

Actually, you can do such a straight copy and paste, I've done it many times, from early versions of Cakewalk on. It just doesn't seem to work right when using plugin synths. Otherwise, when the output is to a system synth, it works fine. (Suggestion to developers--make this work for plugin synths as well--so that one can copy and paste the MIDI track and output synth track from one project to another, and they will sound the same in the second project, without needing tons of additional tweaking.)

I've never used a track template before, not sure how to do that. I'll look into it. Thanks for the suggestion. Do you mean that if one creates the track template first, then copies and pastes both the MIDI track and the synth output path from Project 1 to Project 2, into the track template, that it will sound the same as it did in Project 1, still be routed through that same synth, etc.?

I needed to do the same thing.  The save/insert a template process worked for me.

In the song that you want the track from:
1. Select the track, then right click.
2. Select, "Save a Track Template..."
3. Name the file.  I needed a vocal track so I just used the name of the vocalist as the file name - "Cris".

In the song that you want the place the newly saved track template into:
1. Right click in the track window then select "Insert from Track Templates".
2. Select the saved track template, "Save a Track Template..."
3. Select the name the file.  I selected "Cris"  and a new track was inserted.

Hope this helps.

Why resurrect such an old thread?

There's nothing quite like talking to someone who left 9 years ago. Lol

I didn't realize it was old: it's still relevant, though, I believe.
