I've got the S-type channel compressor, yes. I have to say, I've not used it for quite a while. There's nothing wrong with it, though. Indeed, it's pretty good for vocals, from memory. I must give it another whirl some time.

As for "choosing one thing over another", it's not really like that. I don't think X is better than Y or anything. Totally depends on the material. The vast majority of compression in my mixes is just the U-Type channel compressor and the CA-2A. Other compressors will come in if required.

I like using the bus compressor or channels if I want to get something deliberately squashed and pumping. I suppose more like a special effect than a compressor.

Sorry Beagle, but I think my above picture explains better, when you are selecting a Prochannel, the list to pick from. (will edit)

Yes, sorry, I did not understand that you meant when selecting from the menu.

No apologies, my initial post wasn't clear, I edited to make so.

You keep changing from Picard to a Beagle everytime I look at this thread it seems

Cheers John, I think I hold off the Channel version, I'm sure it will come back on offer, and I've got enough to focus on now with my latest additions.

Seems the CA2a is great for vocals, which I don't do, but may suit my wind instruments well. And to be honest my playing could do with some levelling

I find the CA-2A is ideal for anything that's kind of flowing and not transient-heavy. So great for vocals, wind instruments, and certain kinds of rounded bass sounds.

the icons used in the Pro Channel menu are nice but make the list of names so long that without some sort of organisation it's become unwieldy. Seeing as the Pro Channel plugins are VSTs with a modified front end and scanned by the VST scanner why not have a module within the plugin manager that allows us to create user defined layouts.

Text option (no icons) much needed...

To be fair, I can see that if there had never been any icons, someone posting a feature request for icons, and a bunch of us going, 'yes, that's a great idea'

Maybe a hide icons option.

I would like that myself!

(and the reason my avatar changes from beagle to Jon Luc is because I have a different avatar for online and offline.

I'm not against this approach as any solution is better than none. My personal preference would be to to deal with the list from ProChannel View, so when you are selecting from the list and it turns blue, you hold CTRL, it turns say orang or white, and you can drag it up down the list. Meaning items you don't use very often could be moved to the top of the this. If you have more itens than a screen can hold, these items would be off screen most of the time. to access it would scroll over when you got to the top edge of the last in view. Clicking CTRL when on an icon could toggle between showing icons and hiding, meaning long list would instantly become compact for  veiwing the whole list without having to scroll the top edge.
This may be shortsighted though, when in say three years time when a few more third parties are on board, the list becomes really long, but maybe a new approach could be taken when that time comes.
