Here's a question and exercise for you...

I'm using latest Windows 8.1 but it could apply to other versions of Windows.

Go to the command prompt.
Type verifier plus enter.
Select Create standard settings then next.
Select Select driver names from list then next.
You now get a list of drivers. When you are finished you can cancel out of it.



Question...
Is everybody running "secdrv.sys" which I think is some sort of DRM. I'm running 4.03.086 supplied by Macrovision.

FYI people might be alarmed to see drivers beginning with "dump_" shown as "<unknown>"... this is normal.

Microsoft thoughtfully installs this copy protection scheme on Windows free of charge, and of course without notifying you or asking your permission. I have it on a standard Windows 7 installation.

Usually distributed with games such as Brothers In Arms, Command and Conquer, etc.
Intercepts CD/DVD writes to check for copy protection.
It can be removed without harming Windows. However, if you have a program that uses Macromedia SafeDisc it may not work properly.

Indeed thanks... which leads to the question - how do you find out what app/apps are using it if any? I guess I could run every app and get process explorer out - not very efficient. I don't see any third party CD writing software here either.
