Hi folks,
Since I moved to Dorchester I'm noticing External Inserts are causing dropped MIDI notes, particularly on large projects. It seems to be hit-and-miss with smaller projects, but I can sometimes cause it to occur with multi-out plugins like Superior drummer and a single audio track with E.I. on it. It always occurs with larger, more complex projects. It seems to be directly related to having the E.I. plugin inserted...if I remove it the dropped notes go away, if I put it back in they come back.
 
I wish I had an easily replicable recipe for this, but since it's a bit tough to cause, particularly if you don't use external effects, I don't. Easiest way for me to cause it is to insert Superior drummer, bus the mics to multiple outs, insert an audio track (with audio on it) and then insert an E.I, though with a simple project like that it doesn't always happen...you may have to try it a few times. Like I said, with big projects with lots of tracks and effects it happens every time and is really noticeable...whole measures of drums or other instruments drop out.

I had dropped notes at one time with Sonar 4 - and using drumpads that created too short curation notes.
So I modified a CAL script that made everything at least 40 ticks long.
 
So, no idea if it's applicable to your drumtracks, just an idea if working then.
 
Another is to load a midi monitor plugin and see if the notes are sent to plugin.

Then record/render with this minimum project you mentioned, and when getting a missing note - is it in midi monitor?
You might have to do a loopback for audio from drums to record them too.

Thanks for the suggestion, but this is different. This happens on MIDI parts that work great until I put an E.I. plugin on a track in the project. I noticed it while mixing a few days ago when I went to route a vocal track to one of my 1176's. Suddenly all my MIDI tracks were dropping notes at random times. I pulled the E.I. out and it works great, put it back and I'm getting MIDI drops again.

..and if you know if problem is that synths don't get the midi, and it all is on audio side - it might help Cake and others to narrow down and  to help further.
 
Is it to do with the actual delay entered is wrong or something else?
 
I used ReaInsert in Reaper doing this - and you get plugin to measure delay.
But line up was off - and it seem to have a delay entered that included soundcard latency twice. It measured total delay, but forgot that soundcard delay is already compensated for.
 
How Sonar do this, I don't know - but first level troubleshooting might be to see if internals for midi loose midi events or if all to do with audio part.

The root cause of dropped MIDI notes is usually too low a MIDI Prepare Using buffer. The newer default of 250 causes problems on a lot systems., The old default of 500 works well in most cases. But there have been a handful of users who have reported needing a slightly higher buffer in Platinum. If you're already at 500, try 600-700. If you're still at 250, definitely try 500.

Just for posterity (and in case anyone else searches for this), it looks like increasing my MIDI buffers fixed this up. Not dropping MIDI notes after increasing the MIDI buffer to 500.

Yeah, those newer 250 defaults seem too low for lots of folks.  Glad that seems to do it for you.
