• SONAR
  • Take Lanes in Sonar 3 have multiple takes in one take lane

For some reason my audio clips in Sonar 3 sometimes end up stacked on top of each other instead of in separate take lanes. So if I sing a track twice, I hear both takes in one lane.

I have been using the comping recording mode.

I discovered that if I go in and use the "move" tool I can drag the clips to another lane, which more or less resolves the problem. But it is very confusing because the clips are stacked and there is no evidence they are on top of each other except for the weird sound. Not to mention it took a bunch of wasted time to figure this out.

This has happened in two projects.

In the earlier Sonar 1 there was an ability to re-organize the "layers", but I don't see it in Sonar 3. The manual alludes that the take lanes are rebuilt when you expand the take lanes view, but I don't think this is really the same as the old Sonar 1 ability to clean house.

So the question: is there any way to stop this from happening, and also is there any way to automatically separate out these stacked clips like in Sonar 1 layers re-organize command?

BTW, I bought the license for the Platinum but I have not installed it yet, concerned about stability. I suppose it might now be more stable than S3 so it might be time to move forward.

Thanks

I can't reproduce it even with "Create New Lanes on Overlap" disabled in Preferences. If you can't reproduce it in the Normal project template, I would think it's one of those weird Take lane issues that happen from time to time.

Thanks for the input.

I notice that the problem clips are all of the same name, ie "Record 2".

So the two or more stacked clips had the name assigned by Sonar to be the same. I suppose this could be because I recorded comp takes in different sessions on different days. Don't know if this is a key or not.

But it sure seems like Sonar should have a re-organize command that would arrange the clips and take lanes in a proper manner.

For the sake of clarity, you're talking about Sonar X1 and X3.
I have never seen this behavior either unless I intentionally record into a specific lane. Is this for all projects or a specific one?

It use to happen sometimes for me in X1&3 hasn't happened in Platinum - I do a lot of take recording

Thanks for clarifying. Yes I mean take lanes in X3 and layers in X1.
I have about 10 or so active projects, and this happened on two of them.

At first I was really worried, but eventually I figured out I could drag the clips to new take lanes using the move tool, so now I am not so concerned. Just an occasional nuisance that can be corrected.

Well its worse than ever.

I have a project with 12 takes in 12 take lanes.

If I take one recording more it overlays the clip on top the clip in take lane 12.

According to the documentation, you can click the + button in the take lane view to add take lanes. It is supposed to add a new lane below the lane you clicked on and then renumber the lanes.

I have found that this will not work unless there is a stacked take lane with more than one take.  If I try to add a take lane before recording nothing happens.

So if I record, the recording ends up on take 12, with a doubling in the take lane.

At that point the + button will function, allowing the creation of take lane 13.

But if I try to move the stacked clip to take lane 13, the other take lanes renumber themselves to all be number 11.

Also, I notice that sometimes Sonar will add about 10 new empty take lanes for no reason at all. This happened twice in one session so I had about 20 empty take lanes. I can't track down why this happens.

If I save the project and sign off and return, the blank lanes are gone .

Sometimes the take lanes are nicely numbered 1 through 12, and other times the take lane numbers are all haywire, for instance all of them are number 5.

The documentation says that "if you enable a track’s Expand/collapse Take Lanes button , SONAR moves the track’s clips to separate lanes"

But in my case this is not happening.

This is really difficult to deal with. Its like the project has cancer.

That's definitely abnormal behavior. I suggest you contact tech support attaching the project file.

Make sure you are using X1D and X3E.

Agreed. There were significant take lane bugs in earlier versions of X3.  By the time they released X3e take lanes were much more stable.  I have not noticed any take lane issues with Platinum.
