It is pretty easy to hit the automation lanes button instead of the take lanes button in the track header. This creates a volume envelop. It might be worth a FR to suppress automatic creation of a volume envelops.

Generally in selection box - and option for "None".
That would be there when opening.
And should also be able to use "None" to remove automation.
I really spent some time figuring out how to remove automation is only on automation curve itself.
An 'x' button to remove/delete - as in takes lane - would be nice.
As of now - opening automation creates volume automation.
If pressing '-' key it goes away and closes too - and no automation exist.
If you have touched it - it stays - and becomes a level on main track..then you need to delete the curve by itself.
Better with all consistent principles that are predictable.
Overall a preferences setting if to have as now - but overall an None option.
And while at it I would not mind a color selection for custom color on a curve, that stays when track not selected anymore.
