I'm sure this is simple but I can't find it anywhere and it's very frustrating.
Being a guitar player, I don't use the MIDI stuff often so I can't figure out why with my keyboard going to the TTS-1 sound module I only hear the input echo when I'm recording and not all the time.
 
If I record something and playback, I hear it. While I'm recording, I hear it. With transport stopped, I got nothing.
 
Simple Yamaha keyboard sending MIDI on channel 1 to Roland Octa-Capture fed to TTS-1 for some simple piano stuff. It couldn't be more basic so I'm stumped.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that this is Sonar X3.

There should be two other factors to have midi echo:
1 Click the [*)))] echo button in the track header so it's blue.
2 Enable the Always Echo Current MIDI Track option in Edit > Preferences > MIDI - Playback and Recording and make your midi track the "current track", making sure the echo button automatically turns blue when you make the track current.
 
It's good also to check your controller's midi channel assignment to see that it matches up with the track and synth settings, but since you can record, that's probably fine.
 
Also, with transport stopped, make sure the audio engine is still running.
