I have NEVER been able to figure out how to do range based exports with Sonar. It always selected things I didn't want or didn't select the things I wanted. Total PITButtsicles. Granted I didn't really try very hard to figure it out but I have looked at the manual and have watche many tuts.
 
I decided today was the day (out of necessity) to learn exactly how this was done. I found the following vid on youtube by Obedia...

There is a general description of many of the other export options/functions/features/etc but the Range Export section is super helpful so I thought I would make sure there was an archive of this on the forum.

Drag across the timeline THEN Ctrl select the tracks you want to export. Then choose your preffered export options (Edit > Export > Audio)
 
You can also do it in reverse. Select All (Ctrl + A) or Ctrl select specific tracks then do your range select.
 
Such a simple thing but it has been peeving me off for ages that I was too derpy to make it happen. Maybe this will help others trying to figure it out.

Meh. To be honest I don't know WTH I was doing. It seemed if I range selected it would overide my track selects or if I track selected it would overide my Range select.
 
Now that I ACTUALLY know how to do it I have no idea how I was screwing it up. I'm just happy it's working now.

Anderton had a recent thread about using Sonar for mastering.
 
If Cakewalk is really serious about improving the program for mastering, they will make it easy to control the range of the export. The export should automatically go to the length of the longest active track, not the length of the longest track in the project even if it is muted.
 
For instance, If I import all of the tracks of a CD and arrange them in the sequence of the CD, then I can listen to them for loudness and make sure they all sound good together. Or sometimes I bring in another unrelated tune in order to compare bass level and compression.
 
Then if I want to export individual tracks as final recordings ready for publishing, along comes the Sonar brain teaser about how to make the track length come out correct instead of the length of the longest track.
 
My opinion is that Sonar is weak in this area, evidenced by the numerous threads that show the confusion.
 
Time for a better implementation!

Yes. Export could definitely use some improvements and simplification.
 
I would definitely like some proper Redbook Export options. We hear about how Sonar is capabable of "mastering", and I don't doubt that in the right hands it can indeed produce mastered quality material... however it doesn't do what other programs can as far as tagging, sorting, etc.
 
Considering that is all just data management I don't really see why we can't have those features implemented. Perhaps there are patents involved that make it cost prohibitive.
 
Really though this thread is more about a simple function that can be somewhat confusing so I thought it might help the googley mooglers get a quick answer.

Right on. I'm pretty comfortable with most exporting tasks these days (I do it often enough... lol) but I personally found the little bit he did on the provided export Presets enlightening. I knew they were there, and I knew I could save my own but I had never really looked at what Cake had provided.
 
Whether I use them or not (I just set things up manually on a case by case basis) remains to be seen but it could be educational trying them out to see what does what.
 
So far I usually just use the export dialog to either export finished mixes or individual tracks/stems for collabs. Always in wave format. So much more in there though.

And I guess it may seem weird to those familiar with my posting history that such simple concepts and functions still trip me up after some of the more advanced crap I blather on about. That's because really, even though I spend almost all of my "up" time (ie: when I'm not ill or too stressed to think straight) studying and working with Sonar I pretty much focus on things I need to know RIGHT NOW to get my work done.
 
It is such a huge program and digital music production in general is such a huge topic that when you hunt and peck at it like I do some things fall through the cracks.
 
I'm also a bit of a derpherder... so there's that. lol
