Hi all my friends! =)

My name is Freddie and this thread is meant to be helpful & friendly POST. I thought that we all USERS could share and contribute to each other and share all the nice features/tricks we have found in SONAR. It doesn't need to be SONAR 8.5.1 either, it can easily be any other SONAR version that you actually use as a user...

Many functions are just hidden, that you accidentally find when you work with SONAR.
I would like to thank you all in advance that contribute to this thread. Thank you very much.. it's very kind of you, that you have taken your time, contribute and shared your findings to us all.

Thank you!

...that the new ARP function that is included in SONAR8.5.1 on tracks, can be bounced down to Midi-notes instead with just few mouse clicks? The new MIDI-Arp function is just great. You can bounce it down to midi-notes, like the same as with MIDI Step-Sequencer instead. I will give you an example.

The new Arp-function

  1. Use a MIDI track on a software instrument
  2. Activate ARP on that MIDI track so you can hear the ARP playing notes..
  3. Record something
  4. Now you get a new MIDI-clip in SONAR on that track. If you “double click” on it you will see “long notes” in “Piano-Roll”. When you hit “PLAY” in SONAR you hear the “Arp” is playing ,as long as the Midi notes are. Basically, the new “Arp-function”, plays actually many Midi-notes in the background, even if the Midi-data that you see in “Piano-Roll” in SONAR 8.5.1; is just long Midi-notes. This is how ARP works and that's the whole point with ARP, playing many notes..or a melody when you just pressing just one, or many keys on your keyboard.
  5. Close “Piano-Roll”
  6. Select the Arp-Midi-clip
  7. In Menu, Go to ----> “Edit” then go to ---> “Bounce to Clip(s)”.
  8. “Double click” on the “Arp Midi-clip” again, to open the “Piano-Roll”
  9. As you can see now, all ARP-notes that was playing in the background has been transformed to Midi-notes instead.... Now you can edit, change Midi-notes, Quantize the midi, Delete or Add new Midi-notes ...possibility are endless.
  10. And not just that, as you all can notice. After you “Bounced”- the “ARP-Clip” to a new MIDI-clip; the new included “Arp-function”; automatically switch “off” on that track too. So sweet!

Hope you like my first contribution to this thread.
Regards
Freddie

How to do a Clean install for all Cakewalk products:

 1)      Completely un-install all Cakewalk programs from your computer. This is normally done from Start | Programs | Cakewalk. This will not remove any of your project files or audio data.

 2)      Next you will want to open the Run Command
             a) In Windows XP this can be done by going to Start | Run
             b) In Windows Vista this can be done by holding down the ‘windows’ key and pressing ‘r’

 3)      At the prompt type regedit and click [OK].

***Backup your Registry before making edits - you do this by clicking the File menu, Export Registry File.

 4)      Now delete the following Registry keys:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software

*Please note that this will remove any effects presets and key bindings you may have made in Cakewalk. You can back these up separately if you like, using Options | Key Bindings,
Tools | SONAR Plug-in Manager, and Options | Colors.  Hit F1 in these views for detailed instructions on how to do this.

 5)      Open the 'Run' command again.

 6)      Copy and paste the following into the prompt:

 %appdata%

 7)      This will open your Application Data folder, right-click on the Cakewalk folder and choose ‘Delete’.

 8)      Navigate to the following directory and delete its contents:

 C:\Program Files\Cakewalk

 9)      Open the 'Run' command again and type ‘msconfig’ Click [OK] and then click on the Startup tab at the upper right of the window that opens.

 10)   Uncheck all items listed, click [OK], then restart your computer. You can always recheck those items again at a later time.

 11)  At this point you can reinstall SONAR 8 and SONAR 8.5.

Well Darn Freddie...

This is pretty cool!
THANKS!

As I work on more complex projects in SONAR, I will definitely share my findings...

NOTE: perhaps comically... sometimes I feel as if I just discovered the "ON" switch!
I'd share that revelation in all its' mutations but somehow... Well you know

I've talked about this before as have others, but I wanted to keep this info active.

For people trying to "wrap" dx and dxis as vsts so that they will work with the new Bit Bridge (works well with with Waves stuff):

1 Download this:

http://xlutop.com/buzz/zip/dxshell_v1.01b.zip

2. Unzip the files.

3. Create a folder in Program Files x86 directory. Name it what ever you like, possibly DXvsts.

4. Find the .dll files (and only the .dll files) for your dx plugins and copy and paste them into the new folder from step 3.

5. Drag the dxshell.dll file and shell2vst.exe files into the same folder from step 3.

6. In the folder, drag the dxshell.dll file on top of the shell2vst.exe file and it will wrap your files

You will now notice a new folder simply named DX. This contains all your wrapped vsts.

7. Open SONAR and do a vst scan pointing it to the DX folder and you should be good to go in 64 bit land.

Please note in the DX folder all of your native Cakewalk fx will also be "wrapped", but will not scan properly. You can go in this folder and delete those .dll files. You wont need them as they will open in SONAR anyway.

Hope this helps.

I can't wait to try this! Thank you - if I can get this to work I can stay in Sonar64 bit.

Good luck Dave. The instructions with the .zip file were cryptic at best so I wanted to post how I got it to work. Once I did it was soooooo cool to be able to work in 64bit land.
