Got it...those specific steps don't work for VST3s (but do for VST2s).
 
Do it my way and it works for VST2s - double click the name rather than opening Plugin Properties.

Hi all.  Still waiting to hear back from Cakewalk, but the folks at FabFilter got back to me and stated the VST3 renaming issue with their software is a known bug with Sonar and they've contacted them about it.  So as we've seen, looks like a VST3 issue that'll hopefully get straightened out soon.

It's fairly minor as my alternative works perfectly - please someone try it...

A problem report pertaining to this issue was filed moments ago. It is reproducible when using custom plugin layouts but seems not to occur when using the default plugin layout. Stay tuned
