  • [Solved] I am having a hard time bouncing/applying my FX to a clip. I need help, please.

Hello, all. This is such beginner crap that I am ashamed to even post it but I generally don't bother with bouncing effects within a project. I need to now and although I CAN do it and it is working it is not working the way I expected it to. I'm just checking to see if I am missing something... and yes I've been RTFM about it.

Simple explanation: I have set up a noise reduction FX chain for my guit tracks (this is related to the thread I posted a few days ago which I will update shortly). Due to the CPU intensive nature of the FX involved I need to apply/print this effect directly to each clip one clip at a time. There are six tracks that need this done to with two takes/clips in each track. So I need to repeat this process twelve times.

For some reason I thought I might be able to just use bounce to clips to make this happen but that's only for combining clips. Not applying effects. The correct process is Bounce to Track which does a mixdown of the audio including effects. Should be simple... and in theory it is.

However what I wanted to do was have the bounce appear in the original track within a new Take Lane. That way it is exactly where I want it and I don't have to a) add to my track count and b) copy the OTHER effects and settings I am not bouncing (this is just for Noise Reduction on an otherwise dry clip which will then be processed further with other effects on teh tracks).

In the Bounce to Tracks dialog I select the original track as the destination yet instead of creating a new clip within that track it creates a completely new track.

So is there some trick or setting I am missing to bouncing/printing my FX to a new clip within the original track?

I could have sworn this was possible and the BtT dialog implies that it SHOULD bounce into whatever track I want but it ain't workin'. Maybe I encountered a bug in Platinum?

Anyhoo... kind of frustrating so any help/advice would be great. Otherwise I guess I'll just let it create new tracks and deal with it.

Thanks.

hmm... maybe this type of thing needs to be done in the Clip FX bin? Can I directly bounce the effects to a clip that way?

Yes I will look it up but currently taking a brain break so maybe someone will reply in the meantime.

Cheers.

Edit: Okay... that does seem to be the way to do this based on this entry in the manual...

I should have (and did at some point) know that but my brain is fried from stress. I have not tried it yet but this looks like the answer. Stoopid brain.

you can bounce it to a new track within your project, but I don't believe you can bounce to a specific take lane.

Beep, I'm not 100% sure, but i think a bounce to track will only ever create new track(s), not clip(s)

Now, if you had your Fx chain as clip based Fx, bouncing it to itself should render the fx in place, but again, not as a new clip

Hi, Jonesey. Yeah I just looked up the clip FX stuff and that seems like how it's done. Again Clip FX is not something I've ever needed to bother with but I should have known this. Derp.

Thanks for the confirmation. Cheers.

Thanks. Seems like something we should be able to do but I guess there is some logical reason we can't. This clip FX method is better anyway because I won't have to worry about pan/level/etc settings like I would with Bounce to Tracks.

Cheers.

Oh and to get around the "not creating a new clip" thing during Bounce to Clips I'd just create a new lane and Ctrl+Shift drag the original into it THEN apply the effect to the new clip. I do that kind of crap all the time so I can retain (and a/b) original material.

Just posting that for anyone searching for answers to similar needs.

Cheers.

What's the difference?

Simple enough to move the new clip/track to the track lane you wish...

Just move it after it's been created...

Am I missing something?

Hi, Keni. That's quite a bit of extra (and potentially confusing) work. If it were one or two tracks no biggie but it's 6 tracks with two clips each so 12 repetitions on top of the bounces. I was indeed fully prepared to do that but I knew there was a simpler way which fortunately there was. I was just kind of having a brainfart as to the best way to proceed.

I'll also likely be doing this regularly because the FX Chain I've created is to remove all the nasty hum I get on my guit tracks. It works great but because of the high track counts involved (dual/triple outputs, doubled takes, harmonies, leads, etc) it needs to be bounced otherwise it'll crush my system.

Cheers.

Gotcha Beepster!

I didn't realize that part of things... There has to be a simpler way to remove the noise...?

If it's the only bernal "which way do I turn" guitar hum, usually improving the guittar's shielding for the electronics would deal with it?

I seem to remember painting the electronics cavity with metaluzed (lead) paint?

@Keni... I definitely need to deal with the hardware aspect of my setup and intend to if I ever have a steady cash flow again but you know how that goes. You and I are in similar financial dire straights so I gotta work with what I've got.

Even still I don't think I could totally eliminate the hum because of the ultra high gain stuff I do. It's just part of the deal when doing screecher stuff. The dry tracks themselves before the sims actually have almost no hum at all actually but it's there waiting to be brought to the surface by any compression or effects.

This chain is working spectacularly with very little degradation of the sound which is impressive and I'm not having to buy any extra software to make it happen (I'm using a combo of Sonitus EQ with two instances of R-Mix Sonar's Noise Cancel feature). It is however a resource hog though and causing glitches even with one instance of the chain so unfortunately I have to apply it to the dry clips.

The end goal is to be able to do whatever I want with the sim and other effects without worry about all that racket. If it works as intended (and it seems to be so far) I just solved a massive problem. It will require some extra work everytime but that's fine until I can get some better solutions figured out.

Ideally I would have better outboard gear and a proper set of Mastering/Noise Reduction tools to do this stuff but that is a LOT of dough. Pretty much a pipe dream at the moment.

Cheers, buddy.
