  • X1: How to delete measures (with audio) on all tracks in middle of song?

I haven't been able to figure this out from help or other discussion posts or Sonar X1 Power.

As I am arranging a song and recording "scratch" tracks, I sometimes realize that a part, like a refrain, has too many repetitions of a chord progression, so I just want to snip out a couple of measures--or sometimes a whole section--out of a middle of a song.  Then I want everything else in the song to shift over to the left.

I've tried Edit/Delete/ Delete Hole, but can't seem to get it to work.  If I select all tracks, then use Delete Hole, it doesn't do anything.  If I delete all the audio in all the tracks first, then try Delete Hole, it still doesn't work.  What do you guys do for this?

Same problem in X4.  I have one empty measure that I just want to get rid of in the middle of a song.  I use select all (tracks), then select the measure in the time ruler, but Edit/Delete is not even available.  How can I get rid of that measure?

Try putting some audio into the section you want to remove, and then delete it. That always works for me. I've never had any luck deleting empty measures.

Also, I would make sure the measures I wanted to remove were separate from the other audio by splitting the audio at the bar lines.

Ah!  That seems to have worked, but shouldn't it be a feature that works without adding audio?

If I understand you correctly, I do this by deleting the measures then selecting everything to the right and using the slide function to move everything to the right place.  Or, drag and drop.

Sounds like what I want to do, Lynn.  I'd like a feature that involves fewer steps.  Feature request time?

Once you have selected all the tracks and drag-selected the time range, just press the computer keyboard's Delete key.
Then drag the clips en masse.

Hmmm...

I haven't done this in a long time, but when trying to delete the time range, I remember using the delete from the menu so that it opens the delete dialogue... There is a checkbox there to "delete hole" or some such so that the drag operation is not necessary...

I'm guessing the reason it won't work on empty measures is akin to trying to play an empty song...?

Forgive my poor memory, but....

Keni's nailed it.

If you check "Delete Hole", EVERYTHING will move to the left - events, markers, automation curves, tempo changes etc.

Of course, in order for this to work there must be data "in the hole" to delete.
