  • Saving Softsynth Presets - Best Method/Other Questions

Hello Everyone,
So I just got a new setup, just purchased Sonar Platinum and I want to keep my environment clean and tidy.   Here is my question:
I create many patches on my own using softsynths.  What is the best way to save them, organize them, name them, etc...   I know you can save them one of 2 ways:

A:  In Sonar by hitting the save button in the top of any VST window - which saves it inside Sonar only.  I also know you can export them using the VST "Save Preset" command as a .fxp file.

B:  Alternately, you can also save your preset using the manufacturer's own save-patch function (each a little different), which A: saves as a preset inside the synths own menu, B: can also be exported as a file (different file types depending on the synth).

Which leads me to a few questions:

#1 - I was wondering is there a preferred method over the other from the choices above, or use both in some way?

#2 - How do you guys NAME your patches?   I used to have them named all sorts of silly things like "MetallicPercussion", "GatedSaw", etc... stuff that sorta explained the sound, but I feel like I don't like that.  Sometimes you just can't name a sound LOL.   I also want to get more organized.  What names do you guys use?  Do you put the song title in the patch name?

#3 - What is the best way to save your patches/banks if you need to re-install or move to a new PC?

I hope this leads to some cool discussion!

Thank You,
Adam

I always save inside the synth and periodically export the banks or patches I have made to a backup area which I then backup to CD or other networked computer.

My save method is to create my own bank or sub bank by category, i.e. Lead, Bass, ARP, etc. with patches in these banks as appropriate.

That's a good idea.  I am thinking each song gets its own bank...  would love to hear more ideas.

I usually save them as patches in the synth or plugin and save as fxp with the synth name and patch name in the project file like: rapture-mangledears.fxp. that way I know what project they correspond to, and I can back them up with the project.
Oh, and re the vst header save button - you can export all those saved presets via the plugin manager so other sonar users can import them.

How can you save your presets through plugin manger??

Open the Plug-In manager from the Utilities menu and select Export, then select the presets you want to export in the bottom of the Save window that opens, give the file a name and save.
