Every time I create a project involving VST, I am required to move some notes slightly forward or back a bit, not only to create a realism, but also to compensate some delays or failures in many sample libraries I use.
The end result of the audio is good, but the problem comes later: creating the scores.
When I import the MID file for Sibelius (my scoring tool), all the imperfections that were intentionally created (delays, etc) are not well understood.
Result: a score completely messy, where sometimes would be easier to do all score from scratch, than keep repairing note for note.
I believe that the simplest solution to this would be to have something like "Time +", which is for the whole track, but in this case for each note.
If that were possible, I could write, for example, a note just beat the 2:01:000 (quantized) but I could change some internal property of this note to sound before or after.
Not sure if this is possible, but this would solve the problem of always having two works: one project for audio and one project for the score.

Not really. Creating hard-quantized copies of tracks to be used for notation is the only really viable solution.

Unless you accurately write the shifted notes with exact time values... If you're thinking quarter note but you want it slightly ahead or behind, you might have to write it as a dotted with note and an eighth note rest before/after... Or an eight tied to a dotted eight to deal with proper notation... Just an example. Probably smaller values needed for subtlety... But they have to be accurately written and not simply fudged...

This is much easier to deal with in piano roll as it has far more flexible rules allowing you to pull a note without caring about staff notation rules which are more restricted exactly to force standardization...


If Sibelius is following strict staff rules and properly re-writing your score to accommodate shifting notes in this manner, it would import just fine...

Isn't this because you're using the tools in reverse order ?  In the real world, a printed score is not made from a performance, it's the other way around.  The score is just the outline that you then improvise upon when you perform the piece.  And no one but a computer would play a score the way it is written.

You generally don't have the sheet music until after your idea/song is finished. This is very common.

I would also just hard quantize before exporting, and be careful of any glissandi or appogiatura that needs to be ignored.

FWIW Sonar actually one-ups Logic here because Logic exports (or used to?) the unquantized version regardless of whether you've quantized the track!

I agree. A standard score written with absolutely accurately timed notation would be basically unreadable by humans, and certainly not what the composer intended. It's called a "performance" for a reason, and why there are multiple interpretations or "performances" of any music ever written down (notated).

I think the basic criteria for sorting things out, and quantize to a readable level - is on the notation program - not DAW as such.
 
You have to provide a melody line+lyrics though, in midi to make a score complete, that might not be part of the sounding instrumental parts. Some chord symbols - and one.
 
For me notation is just a means to get together what is needed to register a song by a publisher - and prepare a hired vocalist for their performance.
For others notation is the origin of how they write music - so making the best for both is not easy.
 
It seems notation is too much expecting to find perfect input since it's been targeting people writing music through score - not making score for daw people recording realtime.

I appreciate everyone's opinion, but the focus of my question was whether there was a way to get a final score more easily.
 
Not always hard quantize adjusts the position and length of notes properly.

If some DAW had a way to change the property of each note to move its performance forward or backward without changing its "ofiicial" position and lenght, it could help those who need audio and sheet music simultaneously.
Only two additional properties for note, and all this would be resolved:
1) Note's real execution time;
2) Note's real lenght.

As a work around would a "save as", quantize it and name it accordingly for notation use work?
