  • [SOLVED sort of] Missing Plug-Ins...

Hi Peeps :)

I am currently using Sonar X2 Producer.

Yesterday I decided to dig out some old Sonar 6 projects. These were created some time ago and I didn't bother to copy them across to my new laptop based X2 system when I installed it a couple of years ago.

But I've been struggling of late to "get inspired" so I thought I would copy the old projects across and see what I was up to back in 2005.

Unfortunately, I get the "Missing Plug-Ins" dialogue box for the soft synths I used back then.

For some of the projects, this does not matter because they were quite simple ideas and I just inserted new synths and moved the MIDI track across. That was enough to get the idea of what I was doing...

For some of the projects I had frozen the synth before hand and I was able, in some instances, to find pretty much the exact patch I had previously used.

But for some projects I am struggling, and I was wondering if there was a better solution to reviving the original soft synth settings, somehow.

For a lot of my projects back then I used Absynth 4 quite a bit. Nowadays, if I'm using Absynth I will use V5, but I still have V4 loaded as a plug-in.

I thought that, because I had Absynth 4 installed, it would be recognized in the older projects, but this is not the case, at least on my laptop installation.

Is it just a naming issue perhaps?

For instance, the dialogue box gives the name of the Absynth 4 plug-in as simply "Absynth 4," whereas, in X2, it is called "Absynth 4 x32." I have tried re-naming the plug-in in the manager but that doesn't fix the problem.

Any thoughts?

cheers

Can you load Absynth 4 x32 and Absynth 5 in a new project.  The x32 is just telling you it is a 32 bit version of the software.

Hi Wookiee,  yeah, I can still load those plug-ins in X2, no probs... And they work just fine. I'm hoping there is some way of going "inside" the older CWP files and somehow change a name or path so that it picks up the X2 plug-in instead. I've looked at a couple of similar topics here and they don't help I'm afraid.

That'd be a nice convenience, but unfortunately no, that can't be done.

I've been going through a similar process, having migrated to a new DAW this year and gradually bringing over old projects in case I ever want to dust them off. Fortunately, I still have the old computer on the network.

The biggest frustration was not being able to get SampleTank2 to run on the new machine. That resulted in buying SampleTank3 just so I could continue using those sounds, especially Miroslav. Luckily I'd frozen most of those tracks, so I can at least play them if not modify them.

Interestingly, 64-bit Kontakt drops right in to 32-bit projects and gives me no problems. FabFilter and Meldaproduction effects do the same. But Ozone always shows as a missing plugin and requires manual replacement.

What's saved me are presets. I go to the old machine and save my Ozone settings as a preset, then copy it over with the project. You could do the same thing with Absynth, assuming you have access to the old computer.

Hiya Bit :)

Yes, I still have my old workstation with Sonar 6 on... So presets may be the way to go, although I'm not sure that saving it with the project would work in my case. I might be able to export them out and import them back in on my laptop, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort...

Having said all that, my current situation is making me look again at what I have created (in those old projects) and perhaps updating them with later synths and patches anyway, and on one project that has worked reasonably okay, thus far. I'm inserting instances of Absynth 5, which is technically a better synth anyway, and seeing what patches come close to the original "intention" so to speak. And with projects that also contain a frozen WAV, I'm using those if necessary, but also keeping the original MIDI track, and even layering a new patch over the top.

My Battery 2 tracks are not so difficult to update to Battery 3... Not as many patches to search through LOL

So, all in all, I guess I can close this up as "SOLVED," of a sorts :D

Would installing the older version(s) of Sonar (to use the older plugins) on the newer machine work? (so that the registry will see it in the system)

Possibly Mesh, yeah, but I don't fancy doing that to be honest. My current X2 install is working really sweet at the moment, at least for what I use it for, and I don't fancy messing that up. I'm sure it wouldn't, but I'd rather not risk it.

Thanks for your input :)

I know you will still need to get your presets but there is a function in SONAR that allows you to replace a soft synth so rather than having to insert a new synth just right click on one of the synths in the track view and select replace synth.  Then when you have sorted your preset problem you could just select that preset.  Save that copying and pasting process.

I was mostly thinking out loud and wondered if that will work. I also have all the X versions of Sonar (including Platinum) installed on my new machine and they all seem to co-exist without issues (of course, I've only run one version at any given time.......lol).

Good luck mate!!

Yeah, I tried that but it didn't work for some reason. So inserting a new instance and shifting the MIDI track was the only, and easiest way to go :)
