Is there a method to have Sonar use a single mono track and route/process it in a way that results in a stereo output with one side out of phase with the other?    This is (one aspect) of a stereo widening maneuver, but I'm getting tired of copying a mono track to it's own dedicated track and flipping the phase button.  It makes future editing a pain, among other things.

Are you using a version of sonar that has AUX tracks and patch points? Note Cakewalk by Bandlab does.

If so, maybe you could use sends to send the track to two AUX tracks via patch points, with one track being 180 out of phase. 

Turn the main mono track down to minimum and send the pre to the two aux tracks - changing the phase of one of the aux tracks.

Can you not use the Cakewalk/SONAR Channel Tools plug-in for this?

Putting it out of phase isn't the best way of sterioizing a mono track as the track will completely cancel out and vanish when played back through a mono device. A better method is to copy the track, nudge the copy forward a few ms and pan both tracks apart. I did pick up a mono to stereo plugin fairly recently - can't remember if it was free or on a silly deal. It is fully mono compatible and sounds very natural. Haven't got it in front of me so can't tell you what it's called or where to get it, but someone else may remember it. EDIT: Brainworx Stereomaker is the plugin, but I think the introductory offer is now over, unfortunately.

It is one of the 'stereoize' technics that's good to have in your toolbox for example if you'd like to have a nice stereo image of your mix in headphones but make it somehow uncluttered if playing through a mono system in clubs etc.
 
Basically what you said except it's good way in right hands ;)

Channel Tools. Lets you flip phase on one of the stereo channels. Also has other applications for stereo trickery, such as turning up the sides and applying short delays for the Haas Effect.

I'm still back using Sonar 5 with basic tracks and bus support.  Not sure I'm aware of Channel tools being in S5....will have to poke around...    I was a bit surprised at first that I couldn't just select a mono track to be played stereo (have the mono track sent out both sides) into a bus where I could then flip the phase between the channels.  But this doesn't appear supported.
 
As I said, the split/phase approach is just one aspect, not the whole procedure, for creating a stereo image.  There's other overlays that happen so having things disappear is not going to happen.  Even so, who in the world is going to listen to something in mono these days?  That's even less likely than somebody still running XP and S5 like me.

You will be surprised. There are quite a few mono sound sources that your average Jo listens to - mobile phone speakers for example. I was playing pool in a bar the other night that has one mono speaker in the pool room for plugging mobile phones into - the average Jo isn't as discerning as some of us. I still always check my mixes for mono compatibility.
