scook - Why would there be MIDI clips in the audio track?

That is where they end up when splitting a cloned instrument track. Cloning an instrument track is a problem.

I cloned a track so as to not lose the original, but didn't uncheck something... I've been editing the track and am only now discovering the two are still associated, can I unjoin them?

Select both tracks.  Right click on one of the tracks and then select "unlink" and then click "Independent, not linked at all"

I am really confused.

Why can't I copy/clone a guitar track?

I just did it a couple weeks ago (X3e) and even successfully slide the track 50 or 100 ticks or whatever to fatten up a guitar part. I EQ'd them different from one another and, although I have never done this before, it seemed to work great and there was no track association. They are completely independent of one another.

And just last week, I did the same thing (SPlat) with a bass track, so that I could have a back up copy of the track whilst I messed around with the original. Once I was happy with my changes I deleted the extra track.

Let me know what and why this is bad, thanks

I am guessing the guitar and bass tracks are audio tracks. This thread is about cloning an instrument track. They are not the same thing.

Scook is not talking about an instrument track as in the sense of a guitar etc audio track but a combo midi, audio track for having MIDI dat create audio through a VST instrument plugin. While seemingly more convenient Instrument tracks pose a few problems over the previous way of doing it with one MIDI and one Audio track working together but much more flexible.

Instrument tracks should not be cloned.

No, Cakewalk should either fix instrument track cloning or make it impossible.

We shouldn't be talking to people as if they did something wrong when it is the software at fault.

This might be easier if we called instrument tracks "simple instrument" tracks, which is what Cakewalk calls them. Then no one would think they are, you know, recorded instruments.
And yes, Kylotan -- when you try to clone a simple instrument track, a message should pop up saying "You must separate this track into MIDI and audio first."

You may find Cakewalk has been referring to the track type as an instrument track for some time. When originally rolled out, instrument tracks were called Simple Instrument Tracks. There are still a few references to SIT in the doc (and insert options dialog) however many other references to the track type have been changed to instrument track.

While there are things Cakewalk could do to alter instrument track cloning, my replies in this thread are concerned with the current instrument track implementation and how to deal with it.
