  • Comp Recording Mode to use comping tools?

I've tracked vocals for several songs using, (I think...), the Sound on Sound Recording Mode.  Now I'm trying to use the new comping tools but they are really acting weird.  Do you need to record in the Comping Mode for the Comping Tools to work correctly?  I do understand the basics of the new tools.

Thanks.

What do you see when you expand your take lanes?

The multiple takes.....  Is that what you're asking?  I'm confused.

You don't have to use comp recording in order to use the comping tools later on. Comp recording just means whatever you're recording over will be muted and the last take for any given stretch on the timeline will be made "active" until you start editing/comping. Sound on sound mode just lets you hear everything, including multiple takes, during recording.

If you haven't used the speed comping tools I would really recommend taking a few minutes to watch a YouTube tutorial on them. It will save you a lot of time and aggravation.

I would have thought that.  I'm loop recording and always used Sound on Sound.  Does it now default to Comp Record for loop recording? The tracks do record fine though.

I'm trying to figure out why I'm having so much trouble with the comping tools.  I'm getting lockups and other strange goings on.

Yes, I've been studying the videos and I still do need to learn all the shortcuts but I don't think comping should be giving me so much trouble.  I was very fast in S8.5.  Learning the new workflow is one thing, having Splat lock up and the other weirdness is not making me happy.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Lock ups are always bad. They usually are an indication that something is wrong with the soundcard driver or something else system related. I have had some stability issues that seem to center around multiple Melodyne instances, but I haven't had a single case of comping causing lock ups. I'm counting almost daily use since September 2013 here.

One of the lockups did generate a report.  If it continues I may to send it off to the Bakers.  Is it possible to read those and figure it out?  Or is it code only the Bakers can read?

Thanks.

Loop Record has always been weird for me and just recently corrupted a project. There were many other factors in play though that I won't go in to here.

Right click your Record Button in the Transport Module and be sure you are in Comp Mode. Up your buffers (interface and HDD read/write cache) BIG time before beginning Fast Comping (Fast Comp is one of the major causes of dropouts on my system.. but again other factors are in play). Definitely study up thoroughly on comping procedures and keep a cheat sheet by your keyboard... and don't just go by those Cake TV vids. They are great but check out the manual... there is more to it and doing things WITHOUT entering fast comp isn't quite as strenuous on the system. Actually the fast comp stuff relies on the old audition feature which again has always caused weird crap for me (like dropouts).

Try to use as few splits as possible too. This seems to help because I think Sonar readies itself to automatically play any and all combinations so the more splits you toss into your comping set up the more resources get hogged.

I could be wrong on that and this is all kind of stream of consciousness speculation/advice but I use comping all the time. It is still a bit mysterious to me as far as its quirks and needs but I've managed to bend it to my will if I don't push it too hard.

Maybe not helpful... but maybe it is.

Good luck.

Speaking of looping... I seem to have gotten caught in one.

Well played, forum software.

Well played.

Thanks Beep.  This is interesting stuff.  If it takes more resources that might explain some of the issues I'm having.

How do you enter "Fast Comp" mode?  By selecting Comp Record?  I thought you just used the tools and hit shift-space bar.  I'll do some more reading on it for sure. Honestly, I'd rather comp the way I used to and just take advantage of what the new tools bring to the table.

One of the things about the fast comping that doesn't set well with me was the way the looping works.  It loops the clips, which is OK but what if you want to hear the potential selections in context?  You have to stop and reset outside the loop points and then hit play again.  Now you're out of Fast Comp mode.  Also, often I'm may need to shift a clip a bit and that automatically shifts the split point.  I may not want that.

Thanks for all the comments.  I'm going to dig into it a bit more.  Any other input would be welcomed.
