• SONAR
  • LOST FEATURE - no display for overwrite, sound on sound, or comping

In every version of Sonar before X1, there was a visible display of what recording mode you were in: sound on sound, overwrite, or autopunch. With X1 this feature was discarded. We can easily see if we're in autopunch, but no display for overwrite, sound on sound, or comping.

The only way to know is to open preferences and look under Project/recording. When you change the record mode you can't start the transport and leave preference open, so you can see the mode. You have to close preferences and then if you forget which mode you're in you have to stop the transport and reopen preferences to look.

It sure would be nice if we could add more things to the custom module of the control bar. We're limited to only buttons, no displays like sound on sound. With all the great new features we're getting, it seems this would be a great nuts and bolts basic feature that would be useful to many.

In the large format Transport module, the record button image changes WRT to the recording mode see http://www.cakewalk.com/D...help=Recording.11.html

I've always used the large transport and I can see something on the record button in the tiniest print I've seen. I can't read it, but I see that it likely does says those words. I suppose I can get used to the shape of the print to tell which mode we're in. Is there a way to make them legible? Even as pathetic as that print is, at least it's some kind of indication. I see that hovering the mouse near the record button does have a tool tip pop up the mode we're in and that's helpful too.

Can you fix that link? It gives an error message.

The link works for me in Firefox 37.0.1. The page can be found by going to the SONAR help index, search for "recording modes" and select a link under the subject

The link is okay here in Chrome Version 41.0.2272 as well. There's no text on the buttons themselves. The mode is indicated by the red line (new recording) in relation to the solid or wavy gray lines (existing material.)

Here is part of the page with the record button detail.

Comping

When recording, previously recorded material on the track is not heard. When a recording is done, the newly recorded material is heard and all other takes are time-muted for the duration of the new material.
Overwrite

The new material replaces (overwrites) any existing material. This means that portions of existing clips may be “wiped clean” to make room for newly recorded material. While recording, you will not be able to hear material from existing clips.
Sound on Sound

The new material is merged with any existing material. This means that any existing clips on the track are left unchanged and all newly recorded material is stored in new clips. While recording, you will be able to hear material from existing clips.

Am I not seeing something or are the Comping and Sound on Sound buttons the same?

It's OK. I see the difference now but it's very subtle.

Hi Mike-

The gray line under the red (recording) line in Comping is wavy, but it's straight for Sound on Sound.
