• SONAR
  • Recording MIDI audio via Xonar DGX internal output

I'm using SONAR Professional and trying to record audio through my sound card - an ASUS Xonar DGX. Within the Xonar DGX Audio Center settings, I have Record volume maxed out for 'Mix'. Stereo mix is also set as the default recording device - this works fine when recording audio via Audacity.

Within SONAR I am using the card's ASIO drivers. I cannot select any internal inputs as a recording option, and hence when I attempt to use the stereo inputs and record using an armed audio track, I get complete silence.

Does anyone have any ideas about this? I'm kinda stumped.

Thanks

First, confirm that you have inputs and outputs available and checked under Preferences > Audio > Driver Settings, and that the Zonar drivers are selected as Playback and Record Timing Masters. If none of that is available, then something's wrong with the ASIO drivers such that SONAR is not seeing them. Was Audacity using ASIO?.

Also, Stereo Mix (a.k.a. What U Hear) usually means you're recording from the output of the soundcard rather than its input. The usual result of this is not silence but that previously recorded/imported tracks get re-recorded on each new track that's added. You should have the Zonar's mixer input set to something like Mic or Line In, depending on the source. Stereo Mix is for recording audio off the web being played back by a browser or other media player.

Whether you get this working or not, you should plan to go shopping for a dedicated audio interface to use with SONAR, and leave your ZONAR for use by your browser and generic multimedia apps.

P.S. On re-reading the thread title, I hope you don't mean you're trying to record the audio output of an onboard wavetable synth being driven by MIDI. That would be just too horrible to contemplate, and you should be glad it's not working.
