Matter
I basically looked at the configuration you said you created in your first reply, and mimicked that into my configuration and got it working.

The only other thing I'm interested in figuring out for live purposes (if you can point me toward the right configurations) ... would be to use a couple of the assignable buttons on my controller to switch between tracks/strips in the open project. i.e. button 1 moves the selection from track 2 to track 1, and button 2 moves it back to track 2 from track 1. Does that make sense?

We can continue to discuss this on your forums I suppose, as my main question/issue that I came to the Sonar forums for has been resolved. :)

If we can get this configured the way I want, you can definitely bank on my putting it through its paces.

I will answer here, but we really should move...

"Strip Track <First> +0 (+1, +2, +3, or some variable set before, etc)" and then "Function Select strip". You can also add "Command Move Input Focus to Track View", in case you currently observing some Bus. Unfortunately, the last one is not always working (I guess SONAR bug). But for all purpose except visualization (so auto MIDI input, current context for ACT, etc) "Select strip" is working reliably.

Note that "Select track" has some duality in SONAR. If you mean you not only want to make it current, but also really select it (as clicking on the track number) you should add "Key ','" (comma) in addition (or Shift+',' to extend existing selection).
