  • Platinum Users - questions from a Sonar 8, X1, X2, X3 user

Hey there, considering the upgrade and have a few specific questions for users:
1) Stability - How's it looking currently? I had issues when I went from X1 to X2. It felt unfinished, I had crashes and no updates fixed the issues I was having. X3 has been much better, is Platinum as solid if not better?
2) Does it still fully integrate with the VS-700c console? I still love it as my main control surface.
3) How well does the full version of Melodyne integrate?
4) Has there been any improvements with working with video? This still continues to disappoint and more of my work requires it these days. Syncing items to frames on my last project on X3 was awkward at best.
5) Do all the previous plugins/vst like R-Mix from X2 and V-Vocal from previous versions?

Thank you!

I find this release as solid as X3 was. I can't remember the last time I had a crash.

2) Does it still fully integrate with the VS-700c console? I still love it as my main control surface.

Don't know about the VS-700 but nothing has changed from an MCU & XT perspective, if that helps.

3) How well does the full version of Melodyne integrate?

As well as the slimmed down version i.e. it's great via ARA.

4) Has there been any improvements with working with video? This still continues to disappoint and more of my work requires it these days. Syncing items to frames on my last project on X3 was awkward at best.

Don't know I don't use Sonar for video work.

5) Do all the previous plugins/vst like R-Mix from X2 and V-Vocal from previous versions?

They all work as before but some aren't part of the package anymore, specifically R-Mix & V-Vocal, amongst a few others.

Thank you!

You're welcome.

Don't know about 2-5, but the stability has definitely improved. The program no longer crashes when I switch screensets. I'm really happy.

Well .. as someone who disliked all the x series, platinum is at least better, slightly.   And, from all I have seen so far, quite stable.

So far, my experience with Platinum is exactly the same as Karl's above.

Crash? What's a crash?

The ONLY problem I've had is in trying to insert V-Vocal clips on a project previously started in a Pre-Plat-Project (PPP). This has brought it to it's knees, but it's 100% fine on New-Plat-Projects (NPP)

I'm getting into acronyms today!

My experience with Platinum, which may have been because of my old and weak computer, was pretty bad. I would get white screen flashes repeatedly almost every time I used it, and the program would crash several times a day and could only be run afterwards by rebooting. I also had big problems with a project with a lot of tempo changes. Finally I just gave up, let my Platinum subscription lapse, and I'm back to using X3 which runs fine with the same projects.

VS-700 integration is the same as in X3e  -  no changes, no improvements, nothing broken ...

How are you having problems syncing items to frames?   Sonar has a few tricks to do this.  I have to work very quickly so...If I want a hit (say a drum hit) on frame I play it in live, open up Event list and + or - my way on to the frame.  If i need beat 1 of a measure to land on a frame I use "Set Measure/Beat at Now" or "fit to time" (Modify by changing Tempo Map)...or I do it the old school way by manipulating the meter (ex: I might have one 5/16 measure..I use to do this stuff on manuscript paper before PCs where invented, i can still do a lot of this stuff in my head).

Make sure you understand TimeCode.  That might be what hangs you up.  I have found syncing frames in Sonar to be extremely quick and easy,  but that might be just me coming from pencil and paper.  I spend my day composing music and dropping fx on to specific frames.

Keybinding the above processes used in syncing also makes things happen way quicker and easier.

Good Luck!

I think both X3 and Platinum are both very stable (crash, what's a crash?, as someone else replied). Depending on your needs, they are both powerful & stable. My 2 cents.

It has been very stable for me. R-Mix SONAR works fine also. I don't use V-Vocal so... Melodyne Editor works good too. No issues with it. I know you didn't ask but I really love the new Control Bar>
