I tried x3 and got the same behavior. I'm guessing no one is using remove silence.

I don't get the "jump" to another location, but I can verify that the attack parameter is meaningless. Maybe some of the other ones are too...worth a bug report. This did work at one point, so it's probably something broken and therefore (hopefully) relatively easy to fix.

  1. Create a new project in X3 or Platinum
  2. Add a Tom track with intermittent hits
  3. Process - Apply Effect - Remove Silence
  4. Open level at -20; Close -20; Attack 1000;Hold 2500;Release 1000; Look Ahead 2000; Split to clips true
  5. Ok
Expected ResultsSplits the clips with an attack time prior to the drum hit of 1000 milliseconds.

Actual Results0 Attack time. Also, if you don't click split to clips = true, then the clips move in the timeline.

I was planning to use this feature a lot, so thanks for finding the bug and reporting it. I've also experienced the waveforms moving in the timeline when the split to clips isn't checked.

Attack time does not determine the amount of time before the threshold (open level) is crossed. Attack time, instead, determines the amount of time after the threshold (open level) is crossed. So if you have 1000ms attack time, the clip will "open" 1 second after the threshold is crossed.
This is likely also why you are experiencing clips appearing to shift in the timeline.

Geoff:
This answer seems goofy to me in so many ways, but there you are. I'm hoping I'm just going about it wrong. I'm about to try.

What if you enter a negative value?

Look Ahead (ms)
The value in this field causes the gate to open slightly before the sound reaches the Open Level so you don’t lose the sound’s attack.

I set Look Ahead to 1000 and it didn't open at all before the Open Level was met. It isn't working right.

This tool is useless. I'm a little bummed that even with my GIF showing it wasn't working that my Problem was closed as 'Not a Problem'. It's definitely useless.

@RSMCGuitar
Thanks for the suggestion. It will not accept negative numbers.

Should I submit another problem ticket but bring attention to Look Ahead instead of attack?

You might receive another 'goofy' response. Why not use post #4 and the new findings to create a new thread and post it in the Problem Reports forum so that others can verify the issue(s)?
