Put me down as another who really doesn't like Multidock either and would prefer a way to disable it even if it took a change in an INI file. "TurnMultidockOff = 1"

MultiDock is here to stay because it's so integral part of SONAR X1 design.
Sonar Plus can hide MultiDock, so can my applet, too (coming soon).

That's fair enough and totally understandable - what is baffling is someone who comes on and rants/whinges/moans about a feature * which he's using wrong * and refuses to divulge what it is he's trying to do!

I wish I had that much time available

G.E.L.

John If I am irritated its because i have had to endure replies from people who did not READ my posts, gave me glib and insulting replies and castigated me for coming here frustrated and at my wits end trying to find out a way to not have to deal with this, that does not involve a whole slew of messing around... apparently there is none ... i get that ... I'm not happy about that, am I not entitled to be a bit peeved at that? am i willing to work out another way .. yes, if anyone can take a moment to lay it out in a step by step using english rather than acronyms I don't know what the meaning of is ( because I have never been here before ) and am not up to speed on the lingo ... alot of the illeged guru's here seem to take alot for granted and leap to replies without stooping to put themselves in my shoes.
As i have previously stated I have relearned the upgrades in the past, thats how I came to be at x1 from version 3 ... I really wish people would READ my posts before telling me to" read the manual" which as ihave also previously stated i have and there is no direct way to do what i would like ... so i am heaped with insults and abuse...and am trying to keep from blowing a gasket

Obviously folks did read your post-hence the hostility. You come in here calling CW programmers dickheads. Demand and rant they better this and that and you expect what? You got plenty of help and yes, some lip for your poor childish attitude. demands and foul mouth.

G.E.L. -

You are not alone. Many folks, long-time SONAR users, do not "get" the multidock, and do not see it as an improvement.

This doesn't make them stupid. About the worst you could say is that  they are unwilling to change or compromise.

In my case, I do not appreciate that the multidock is better than the window management in SONAR 8.x, and there is nothing else in the X1 release that compensates for the negative aspects of multidock, in my opinion.

The SonarPlus utility mentioned above goes quite a long way to reducing the negative aspects of the multidock. I'd say "check it out" but with X1D on the horizon, we have no guarantee that SonarPlus will be updated (it is version-specific).

Very true on all counts...

I prefer to work in one screen at a time (full size) for these windows.... Plugins and the likes I want full open and "live with" them being on top... I don't keep them open long. Making their view smaller and the TV smaller just doesn't work for me... and it's more clicks/strokes to get things the "right" size...

I checked it out fairly well when it was first released and again after X1c... It's still just not for me and if they simply allowed us to hide it as we can the Browser (I un-dock it and it opens as a small window as it did "as" 8.5's Synth Rack)...

Sonar Plus does very well at handling the dock and getting it out of the way... As to whether Plus will work with X1D... I'm pretty sure it will as the only two reasons for it to have issues (at the moment) are 1.) when it checks the version number (which Panu has easily and quickly remedied before) and if commands have been moved to different keys.... Maybe someone with a 700 might find an issue as they seem to have received a number of new keys in X1d...

So I think you're safe to use it now and continue it later... X2? We'll see... Now that Ben's a Baker too! He has announced he will not be developing Plus anymore himself...

8.5 vs. X1c? I'm a staunch 8.5 lover... but there are definitely a number of improvements in X1 and once over the learning curve issue, It's back to the same old Sonar for the most part... There are quite a number of enhancements that are an improvement and a few that are 3 steps forward and 2 steps back... and they are getting improved, so in time you'll likely end up wanting to learn the new gui anyway.... so getting it now is an early start...

As to being too busy to learn the new? Then the OP definitely has the right to simply continue using 8.5 as I often do. then there's nothing new to learn and you can proceed with your busy day...

Regarding why did you upgrade? Many of us (including myself) do so regularly for an assortment of reasons... If your reason is/was good enuf? Then you're still getting value for your investment.... If not, a poor investment was made and more research should have been put in before deciding to buy... Too busy to find out before buying? Too much of a hurry? I could give many remarks...

I myself complain when my time is abused as the envelope editing and other things are for me now... But I still believe I made a worthy investment as I continue to find small, but important and useful new abilities as I always have with a new version...

I will continue to use X1 more as it gets better and still rely on 8.5.3 when I really need the speed...

But honestly? After a while it gets very PITA confusing to remember which version I'm in and which command to use, and where is it? ;-) So I progressively move to X1 and continue to remark to the Bakers about my needs and desires... Sooner or later they all seem to arrive .... and then some!

As others have alluded to, the answer is Sonar Plus.

I have learned that it's best to open it first (from the utilities menu) before opening a project.  Otherwise there's still a lot of undocking, moving, etc. before MultiDock is removed.

I really hope that Sonar Plus will work with X1D.  I'm also hoping that, since Ben is now working for Cakewalk, Sonar Plus will be integrated into future releases.

Many suggestions for Sonar Plus, many thanks. I'll wait out X1D and see if anything from S-Plus has been integrated. If not, I'll try it if it gets upgraded.

Just to explain where I'm coming from:

I use a netbook when tracking at client's studios because the fan never starts up. Essential for quiet instruments or delecate voices. And it's convenient to carry and cheap to replace in case of accidents.

Now, if you have a 10" screen, that multidock bar causes significant pain, especially if it is just boldly saying "Multidock".

Hi Tim...

I have mine configured so that it opens X1, then loads itself... So I don't have to open each separately...

Works very well here... I dbl-click on the Sonar Plus icon, Sonar opens and then Sonar Plus opens and I'm ready to load my project....

Best of luck...
