I have OneNote ... cool tool, but it's heavyweight (IMO) and not terribly portable.

I even use vim quite bit

I have used the free One Note app on my iPad, my iPhone and my Galaxy Tab - everything syncs via One Drive cloud sync. I have One Note on my Daw (not a powerhouse by any means). Pretty much just keep it on the Galaxy Tablet and my Daw now. I disable my wifi when working on my daw, but enable it otherwise which allows One Note to sync. Nice to have access to daw project notes etc, on my tablet.

Old school here I keep a studio log on the recording desk and just jot down what needs to be done, simple but it gets the jobs done.

MS OneNote, or a different note app called One Note?  Either way my phone is dumb as I'm not iInclined.  By portability I mean between applications (not to be confused with apps).

MS OneNote (and office) on my DAW. Freebie apps of same are available on android and iOS. Stripped versions but fully functional. I do all entries etc on my DAW in the full soft, access everything on my tablet or other devices.
As for portability between applications, I think OneNote is the ultimate integrator - I put Excel spreadsheets, word documents, tables, all kinds of pictures, html, screenshots etc into OneNote. I don't do anything/much the other way, but can't imagine it'd be difficult to go from, eg, OneNote into word or excel.
(Sorry about the space - definitely talking about the Microsoft program and its associated apps)

No problem on space from my perspective.  It's a discussion about potential tools to accomplish what was asked in the OP AFIAC.

I have no doubt that OneNote interops nicely with other MS applications.

Great question!

Is it only me that keeps all this stuff in my head?

Unfortunately, my head leaks badly, and has both a bit of wobble, and it makes noise when I go too fast.

I'm old school too.  Yellow legal pad next to the keyboard with notes scribbled randomly all over it.  Not exactly "searchable" like OneNote, but a lot more organic for me than using another program on the comp.

These are all great ideas! Thanks everyone for responding. I use OneNote for a lot of things, and was thinking it would be a good tool for this too. I store my notebooks on OneDrive so I can access them from my tablet, PC or phone. Looks like that's the path for me!

And I like the tips about using markers. I've been only use them to mark sections of the composition. Why didn't I think to mark areas that need attention?

This is what I love about this community. People really try to be helpful. Much appreciated.

P.S There is an Android and an iOS version of OneNote too. Another similar tool is Evernote.

Hey, sven450! We must have been separated at birth (I hope this imagery is not too disturbing for you)! I, too, use a yellow legal pad (must be yellow, not white, because white glares).

I enjoy the personal touch of seeing my own handwriting, odd but clear-to-me symbols, notations and scribbled illustrations. There are pen gestures that are simple, fluid and intuitive and instantly available as they occur to you that are either impossible or ridiculously time-consuming to replicate by keyboard in a computer programme.

Also, you can begin immediately, having opened nothing more than the cap of your pen. So I'm old-school like you and Bob Bone.
