• SONAR
  • X3e AND current Platinum problems dragging midi to desktop (destructive)

I must be bonkers.

With different projects in either X3e or current Platinum, I am having issues with drag and drop export of midi data to the desktop.

So, I am guessing it is because I have lost my mind and am doing something wrong.

1.  Highlight desired midi track, which contains numerous midi clips, all created with Step Sequencer.  (if that matters)
2.  Right-click on one of the highlighted clips, then click on Bounce to Clip, to create a single midi clip from all the existing clips.  (result is a single clip, as expected)
3.  Click again on midi track to highlight/select midi clip (which is the newly-created single clip of entire track)
4.  Drag and drop midi clip to desktop.  This DOES create a midi file, as expected.
5.  What is NOT expected is this also resulting in the highlighted midi clip being DELETED from the midi track.

In other words, while the drag and drop does save the midi clip as an exported midi file on the desktop, it also has the highly undesired effect of deleting the midi clip from the highlighted clip for the track, effectively wiping the track of all midi data.

If I click on Edit, I can recover the clip by clicking on Undo Delete, but I certainly do not recall ever having to do this in the past.

So, can someone please either give me the correct way to accomplish the drag and drop export, or confirm that this is indeed a bug?

Again, this behavior exists in both X3e and the current Platinum, on a patch current Windows 8.1 - i7 (see specs).

I did find where in 2013,  I can see where I posted success in doing drag and drop, and it worked: http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2871670

So, I don't get it.

Try holding Control button whilst dragging, which should copy  the clip to desktop.

Not at my DAW at moment to try it.

Edited for clarity.

I guess staying up all night working on odd meter sequencing was not the best idea.

Yes - holding CTRL while dragging worked - I just do not recall having to do that in the past, nor did I see that being done in 5-6 past threads about it that I found when I searched prior to posting.

So, is this how it has always worked in Sonar?

Perhaps it is the WINDOWS behaviour? - ie Windows "moves" files on the same drive and "copies" files to different drives

It would be interesting to test whether a drag and drop (without CTRL) to a different drive would cause a "copy"?

These are all on the same drive.  Desktop was changed, via the Location tab in its properties, to the same drive (2nd disk drive), that Cakewalk Projects was also moved to during computer setup some time ago.

I just do not for the life of me recall Sonar behaving like this in the past.

You're welcome.

Having finally had a chance to test this out, I am not seeing this behaviour in X1, X2, X3 or Platinum.

When I drag a MIDI clip to desktop (without holding control) - the original clip remains in the track in Sonar.

Did you try rebooting the computer?  Whilst testing this, I tried X1, X2 and X3 with no issue.  When I then opened Platinum, dragging to desktop would not work at all.  Restarting fixed it.

Anyhow, I am glad that my suggestion at least helped.

OK, so I am NOT bonkers.

I will try to restart and see what happens, and will run some additional tests.

I can reproduce the drag-and-drop to desktop problem in Platinum (32 and 64bit).  The cursor changes to a '+' when outside of Platinum, but no file is created.

Sonar X3E works as expected.

I found a post in the Problem Reports forum that references the problem, but it doesn't appear that anyone generated a CWBRN report. (http://forum.cakewalk.com...-Desktop-m3181996.aspx)

You're welcome.

I am using Windows 7 on my DAW. I don't know if that is relevant, but thought I would mention it.
