Rim,

Glad to hear it...

For all you get for the money, I"m pretty impressed...
While I like the VS Pre's better...the ones on the R24 are VERY acceptable...
and the headphone amp seems to be cleaner....so that's a bonus...

I plan on using the R24 as a live mixer for the band too...I get to use all my
plugs that way.....which is another big bonus...

If the R24 had better effects and balanced outs....it would be UNBEATABLE for the money..
but I can work with what it has...

So you guys have had no trouble getting Sonar to recognize the R16 as a control surface- and the main things about a control surface like, faders, transport, scrub wheel, mutes solos, etc- work ok?

I guess cclarry you can't get the autopunch to work? How about locaters and that kind of stuff? Can you control anything like EQ's for a channel or anything else?

cclarry, when you say that you get to use all of your plugins while using the R24 as a live mixer, are you using it with a laptop running Sonar or is it stand-alone?

I will be using it with my laptop and Sonar X1 PEd....but you could use it as a standalone with the onboard effects...
It's a Digital Mixer...with a built in Sampler and Drum Machine...

It has Reverb, Compression/Limiting, Chorus, Delay, Distortion, Flanger, Parametric EQ, and also has both
Insert and Send/Return effects....all onboard....while they are not the BEST...they are acceptable...

You can use it as a standalone recorder with an SD Card and record 8 Tracks simultaneously, and 24 Tracks total...
The audio interface is USB powered, or can be run on 4 AA Batteries, or AC Power...

For the money, it's quite a nice piece of kit....

So- no one has any experience with using the R16 or R24 with any version of Sonar AS A CONTROL SURFACE?

It does really look like a great box- I'd sure appreciate it if anyone could tell me how it functions as a control surface! Thanks!

As a control surface, it will move faders, and control the transport.  Does not punch in/out or pan when connected to Sonar.

I always thought the R16 had a really attractive set of features for the $. With external pres it's probably very nice. I wonder tho, that since it seems to have been very popular, if they might be coming out with a new/improved model?

Just as a follow-up. I did get an R16 and it works fine as a control surface, like everyone said, doesn't loop, punch or pan- yet. Also, it doesn't cause problems when used with another control surface (Tascam US-428) so now it's like I've got 16 faders which is nice. Works as a control surface with Reaper too which is helpful since I need Vari-speed so bad. Could not get it to work in Avid Media Composer... but THAT'S a real finicky app for sure!

It doesn't conflict with my 2 Focusrite Sapphire Pro 40 audio I/O's as well, just don't enable the audio drivers in "Audio Options", but I think you HAVE to install them into Windows for it to work.
Just select the R16's "audio interface" for control surface ins and outs in the control surface dialog- a little counter-intuitive, but that's what it needs.

It's for sure one of the coolest toys ever for remote recording, and the built-in mics are surprisingly good. No hard drive noise is great too, rechargeable battery power... usb file swap into Sonar works effortlessly... I finally have a studio in my treehouse!

I really recommend the R16! Only cost me $265 (used) on eBay!
