  • How Can I Protect FX Chain from Changes

I recently noticed that some of the FX Chains are "protected" so that they don't allow you to extract the plugins that are contained in the FX Chain.  That's a great and forward thinking feature that I didn't know existed!

Does anyone know how to apply protection to FX Chains so that they cannot be extracted and changed?

Edit - I just discovered, that you can automatically extract the plugins by holding the Shift Key down when you load the FX Chain into the FX bin.  So they are not "completely" protected.  Anyway, is there a way to "protect" FX Chains so they cannot be extracted and changed (or reverse engineered)?

Thanks,
Paul

Why would you want to do this? What is great about stopping people modify the sounds?

One might want to do this to keep others that might be using the studio from reconfiguring the FX Chains that they rely on.

What got me interested in this is that some of the FX Chains provided in Platinum don't allow you to easily see the underlying effects that are contained within them or edit the properties of the FX Chain to see how the UI is integrated to each of the underlying effects.  (At least, I haven't been able to figure that out on some of the FX Chains provided with Platinum.  Check out the "Acoustic Piezo" for an example.)

I'd like to know how to configure or protect my FX Chains similar to those FX Chains.

Thanks,
Paul

PS - I guess another reason could be that if you can protect an FX Chain from reverse engineering, then it would encourage enterprising knowledgeable people to produce FX Chains, with value to others, that could be sold.

Well for preventing them from being changed, you could just select the files you want to protect in WIndows Explorer, right click> Properties and make the files "Read Only"  That way they can't be overwritten with new settings.  Not everything you want, but easy and quick and does one piece.

How did you discover that?  Chance?

I had assumed that the workings of, e.g. Craig A's amps, were hidden to protect I.P., or whatever it is called.  What made you search further?   Was it a calculated guess, or did you just try many different combinations?

Just genuinely curious.

I don't think anyone could claim IP over putting together fx chains using someone else's plugins.

Don't underestimate the law or a lawyers ability to assert a claim.

IP is not the same as a copyright or patent. There were certain things I found out about emulations while doing the FBX project which I haven't see used in other emulations, primarily because others were trying to emulate the actual sound, whereas I was trying to "idealize" it. As far as I know this was proprietary to the way Gibson did emulation.

I read the Sonar documentation.  I think it was under the topic of Using FX Chains.  I was looking to see if I could find out how to "protect" FX Chains.  See this link: https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR%20X3&language=3&help=Browser.09.html

So with all the "extra" buzz my post has created.  I'd like to restate the original question:  Does anyone know how to protect FX Chains like some of the ones that are provided with Platinum?

Thanks in advance for any information,
Paul
