  • Snap to zero crossing not snapping in Platinum - what have I missed?

I am wanting to split some audio clips and I have "Snap to audio zero crossings" selected in preferences. When I zoom into my audio track and try to select at or near the zero crossing - it doesn't seem to want to 'snap' to the zero point. I am sure I used to be able to do that in X3. I've tried high and low magnetic strength. My 'snap to' grid setting is '1 sample'. What have I missed?

I tried this this morning also and got the same results.

So how does "snap to zero crossing" come into play? I doesn't seem to work when picking a point to split at.

Snap to zero crossings does not relate to the now time but to editing audio. When snap to zero crossings is selected and you're slip-editing a selected clip, the beginning or end of the clip snaps to a zero crossing as you move it. The Preferences page that includes the checkbox for snap to zero crossings has a "help" button that explains this.

Slip-editing as in trimming the left or right edge of a clip? I'm still not seeing it. With the snap to zero crossing preference selected, snap on, and snap set to 1 sample, I can stop the left or right edge trim anywhere along the waveform. It doesn't seem to snap to a zero crossing.

Is your Snap switch set to "To" or "By". You need to have it set to "To" in order for it to Snap to the zero-cross points, mine is working as it should.

I'm seeing two problems in Platinum:

1. Snapping the Now time and splitting to zero-crossings is not working in lanes; this was a problem in X3, too: http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2973843. Only slip-edits will snap to crossings in lanes.

2. It's mostly working in the parent track for all tools, but I'm finding that it snaps one sample to the left of the zero crossing if the nearest crossing is to the right of where you click, which I think is a new issue.

BTW, you can snap the Now time in the parent if you click the clip in the lower half where the select tool is active.

I think this may require a feature request. The help file says that snap to zero crossings works with editing audio, but it's unclear whether splitting is considered part of editing, or whether help refers exclusively to slip-editing. I wonder if dragging is somehow necessary to "find" the zero crossing.

Doing some further testing, I think I have discovered what conditions cause the issue to occur. It seems restricted to *.rx2 files and groove clip files, which is what I was working with when the problem was noticed. On regular audio clips (ie not rex or groove clip), snap to zero works consistently whether I'm slip editing or selecting a section of audio to move or delete. As Craig indicated above, 'Now time' is not affected by snap when choosing a time from the timeline. It does appear to work when selecting within the track.

So my question now becomes .... Is 'snap to audio zero crossing' meant to be applicable within rx2 and groove files?... because it would appear that it is not? (see my picture in original post)

I think that's probably to be expected with looped/grooved audio. Since the final shape of the waveform doesn't exist until it's rendered (either on playback or by freezing/bouncing), it's not possible to SONAR to know where the zero-crossings will end up except,  possibly, when the project is at the loop's native tempo.

As for snapping to zero-crossings when clicking in the timeline, that plainly is not going to happen because SONAR doesn't know which clip to reference.

What you say makes sense Brundlefly. I'll need to render the clip to regular audio first before trying to edit.
Jim does that account for what you are seeing?
