I think what I don't like about the "color on color" scheme shown in X1 is that it just sort of looks faded to me.  I prefer more contrast, even color against black.

I agree it does look faded, probably not the best example. The way Studio One, Cubase, Digital Performer, and Pro Tools handle it makes the waveform much more distinguishable, that's probably the better example.
 

I am using X3 and just go with the default colors.  I don't want to spend the time to customize what I have, just to have it change in the next version.  I do ok with it, but really liked the old (Sonar 6) brighter color schemes, if I remember correctly.

Didn't think there would be a next version, just an evolving one. I have customised the colours on mine. I'd like a bit more control over that. I liked the thred from the past where people posted pics of the schemes, and even shared their colour files. Added a nice vibe to the community

Yeah, I'm all for enhancement the color customization we currently have.   Feature request it?
 

I like the colors to quickly identify things in large projects.
