I am working on a PC with Windows 7 and using sonar x1 studio. I have just noticed that 300Gb of space have been taken up by User/appdata/tempfiles. They all seem to have a long number description for each file. Is this something that gets created by sonar after having created many cakewalk projects? I am tryng to find out if I can safely delete these files? Thanks for any help. Rick

Sonar doesn't create any temp files.

You can safely delete all those files.

Hi Mike, thanks so much for responding so quickly. I thought I would show a few examples of these temp files.
1. manifest.fingerprint,manifest.json
2.scoped_dir_4380_15037bueno.crx orcrv_install or cookies journaldata_0data_2 or appcach local storage
3.DFDDBBE248b62EE286.TMP
4.clipboard cache-7
5.etiles_vol9ox52f3ueqxf
6.FINF194.tmp
and many many more. I have no idea where these files come from. Tell me if these make any sense to you. Thanks again, Rick

Just about every program on your machine uses C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Temp as a repository for temporary files. You can safely delete the contents of that folder (some files may be in use by programs running on your machine though so cannot be deleted).

a lot of the files are part of installers for such things as windows updates and left over from any program you've installed. Its safe to remove them though some may not not be able to be deleted as they may be resident in memory or temporarily used by a program. Windows is smart enough to tell you if that's the case and wont let you. Its usually a small inconsequential number of files.

Do note that it's worth closing down all applications apart from Explorer while doing this - applications using temp files will often "lock" them and prevent them being deleted while the application is running.

It would not take long at all if this "Select All" mod was made to your PC http://www.sevenforums.co...-menu-windows-7-a.html

A good general rule for applications that use temp files is not to write anything in the standard temp folders that could not be deleted with impunity. Of course an even better rule would be to include a cleanup routine that will delete those files when they are no longer needed. But even with such a cleanup routine, useless files could be left behind if the application crashed. And then of course there is programmer laziness, or a desire to make it look as if things are running faster than they are. So generally it is true that anything found in the temp folders can be deleted without a problem. Only rarely, like with everything else in Computerland, there will be a problem.
