BTW, the basic install is similar to running the Platinum installer only. None of the sample based synths are in the basic installer. Even the additional content is only the Artist instrument. No need to reinstall that package if you already have a full Platinum install.

What if I own Platinum but don't have it installed? :) can I get my Dimension Pro back without installing Platinum?

It would be better not to confuse the OP and keep this thread about direction junctions but if you want DP run the DP installer that came bundled with an old version of SONAR.

I have read that mlink junction will not work if the folder already exists in the directory you point to?
My Cakewalk Content folder is over 12GB's.

Also am I correct in assuming I only need quotes for target if it contains spaces?

Thanks

OK, So is there a Folders tab in preferences? Or do I need to do this with project files also?

Furthermore, this will only work I guess if I uninstall my Plat install because this would be duplicating folders with the same name. Hope that makes sense.

I just never imagines I would have to uninstall my Sonar plat.

Keep Platinum installed, it has all the plug-ins. There is a preference page just like SONAR for folder locations.
BandLab Cakewalk installs in a separate Cakewalk Core folder next to Platinum.

After installing BandLab Cakewalk make sure to review the folder locations in Preferences.

You can create a junction to a folder that already exists:

C:\Users\me>mklink /j testing C:\windows
Junction created for testing <<===>> C:\windows

C:\Users\me>cd testing

C:\Users\me\testing>
Quotes are needed for paths with spaces, yes

In the example above, "C:\Cakewalk Content" must not exist but "D:\Cakewalk Content" must exist. Yes, quotes are used when spaces are in the path like the one between Cakewalk and Content but it does not hurt to have them if the path has no spaces.

I am concerned about my samples on E:\ drive and Cakewalk Content on E:\ drive. My E drive is named Samples but it also has the Content folder on it.

What is your concern?

Well. So the new install will just write all cakewalk content to my existing CC folder? I mean using the mlink junction.

I guess it will over write anything that exists or will it ask me first? what do I say?
Also, so I don't have to worry about my samples because this installer has none? Correct?

Thanks so much Scook. Andy was helpful also.

When you install the new Cakewalk, you have the option of installing just the application or app + content. If you already have SONAR Platinum installed, there is no need to install the content.

My C: drive is only 256 GB in size, so the bulk of my audio resides elsewhere.

I have all my CW instruments (AD, Studio Instruments, Dimension Pro, Rapture, Session Drummer, etc.) on my E: drive, which is also where all my other samples live (e.g. Kontakt, Superior Drummer, Omnisphere). I had previously set up junctions on the C: drive so that, from SONAR's perspective, these appeared to still be in their default locations. That saved having to reconfigure individual instruments. Those links are still working fine under the new program.

After installing New Cakewalk, all I had to do was go into preferences and correct a couple things: added some folders to the VST scan paths, and changed my Projects and Wave Files destinations (on my system, they are d:\projects and d:\exports respectively). After those minor adjustments, I was able to open and edit existing projects in either application and even bounce back and forth between them. You can even have both open at the same time, which is handy for comparing settings.

The new cakewalk.exe is, at this time, merely a recompile of sonarplt.exe with some enhancements. For now you can think of Cakewalk by BandLab as the next version of SONAR.

Yes, if the junction is there, the new stuff will be added to where the junction points.

BandLab Cakewalk installs like an old SONAR upgrade (think SONAR 8.5 to the X-Series not SONAR 2017.01 to 2017.02). It updates the "Shared Folders" plug-in manager, vstscanner, etc. It creates new folders for the program, user directory and content called "Cakewalk Core" beside SONAR Platinum.

Not going to overwrite samples.
