I've assigned an automation lane to a parameter in a soft synth.  I'd like to assign the "write" automation to a knob or slider on my control surface so I can write the automation more intuitively.  Is there any way to do that?
 
If there's a better way to accomplish the same results, I'd be happy with that...  How do you do it?

Right-click in the automation lane fader and select "Remote Control..."
